«God, Calum, way to give a girl a heart attack!» I shrieked and got up from the lying position I was in and sat up.
«Sorry Maddie.» He chuckled, and sat down next to me, his feet also dangling in the water.
«Why are you up here?» I asked him.
«I could ask you the same question.» He said, looking at me, squinting his eyes to adjust at the dim lighting.
«I know, but I asked you first.» I responded childishly.
«Okay, well, I couldn’t sleep.» He sighed.
«Me neither.» I said, and then we fell in silence.
«Well this is interesting.» He said, after a few minutes. I chuckled, lay back down and closed my eyes, feeling the fresh air on my face.
«It’s nice, I like it.» I answered simply. Being in silence with my best friend, on a rooftop, in London was one of the best things ever.
«I like it too.» He said, then paused. «But are you going to tell me why you couldn’t sleep?» He continued.
«I guess I could.» I teased him, eyes still closed.
«Will you?» He insisted. I sighed, and got up and sat down on a nearby bench, Calum not far behind me. He sat next to me, and when he saw my eyes becoming glassy, he pulled me into a bear hug.
«MADDISON DAWKINS tell me what’s wrong NOW!» He said, half laughing, which made me smile.
«Okay, okay.» I sniffled. «I’m going to break up with Ashton.» I stated, looking straight ahead.
«What, why?» He said, shocked. «You two are perfect for each other!»
«Calum, if I tell you something, you mustn’t judge me, or make fun of me. Okay?» I asked to make sure he would take the next piece of news calmly.
«Of course.» He said, lowering his voice. I took a deep breath.
«I still have feelings for Luke.» I admitted, once again not looking at him. He didn’t say anything, just ran his hand through his hair.
«Honey, Luke’s a player.» He said, making me look at him. «He’s no good, Ashton’s the perfect guy for you!» He said.
«But I don’t love him!» I shouted, and then fell in ashamed silence. Calum sat there, once again, silent.
«I honnestly don’t know what to tell you.» He finally said, quietly.
«Don’t say anything then. Let me make my own choices.» I said, wiping away a forming tear. When, yet again, Calum didn’t say anything, I continued. «Calum, I don’t want to get in a row with you over some dude. You’re my best friend and I don’t want you drifting away because of Luke or Ashton, or anyone for that matter.» I said, looking at him.
«I’m never, ever drifting away from you!» He said, apparently shocked, and he engulfed me once more into a massive hug. When he didn’t let go and I wasn’t comfy, we switched positions, and I straddled him and burried my face in his neck. We stayed in comfortable silence for a bit, and then he picked me up.
«Calum, what are you doing?» I asked as I was raised from the ground and was thrown over his shoulder.
«Ahah.» He said, trying to make the suspense last, even though I knew exactly what was about to happen and I didn’t like it.
«Calum, don’t you dare!» I shrieked.
«Shhh, it’s 2AM here, you don’t want us kicked out of the hotel, do you?» He teased me.
