There's always that one dude who has the troubled past. Sometimes it's the MMC, sometimes it's the FMC.
MMC:
He probably used to be a criminal/gang member, then got destroyed by the soul/moral crushing lifestyle. Either that or there's an abusive parent somewhere. In werewolf/vampire books, he probably killed a lot of people in the past or has some sort of "dark form" that he used once and everyone's afraid of it.
FMC:
The MMC always wants to figure out the FMC's weird past. Sometimes she's a gangster too, which is always fun and badass. I've seen a bunch of murdered parents too. In a lot of werewolf books, the FMC's pack was attacked by rogues and that was a really traumatic experience. She also may have had an abusive mate in her last pack so she ran away.
