Five minutes.

Ten. Fifteen. Twenty. Wendy had to force herself to stop checking her phone. You said you’d be here on time, and if there was anything you needed to be punctual for, it was this.

“Honey, is everything okay?” Wendy’s mother placed a hand on her daughter’s shoulder from behind, concern drawn on her face.

“Yeah, I’m good mom. Y/N’s just hit a bit of traffic.” Actually, she didn’t know where you were. No text, no phone call. She stopped leaving voicemails after the fifth one. The initial anger coursing through her body started to seep away, replaced with anxiety. Here she was, blaming you for not keeping your word when something, anything could’ve happened. She checks her phone, thirty. Wendy takes a deep breath, reminded of the crowd of people around her.

“It’s nothing major, you know, but my family does it at least once a year and it would mean a lot if you came. You’ll finally get to meet my parents, they’ve been bugging me a lot about us. But for the love of god, you can’t be late.”

It took a lot for your girlfriend to find the courage to ask, unbeknownst to you. This is the first serious relationship she’s had in a long time, and she felt sure of you right from the beginning, even with your terrible sense of time.

You were genuinely surprised at the invitation, face going red and Wendy had to look away because of how much you were making her heart race. “I won’t.”

So much for that. Her mother rubs her shoulder with an understanding smile. “She’ll be here soon, don’t worry.”

“Yeah, I hope so.”

As more time passes, more family members become curious to your whereabouts, leading to more drinks getting thrown down Wendy’s throat. While contemplating if she should have another, her phone buzzes, answering without a look.

“Where are you.” She doesn’t even pose it as a question.

“I’m outside, can-“

Wendy runs to the front door, swinging it open to find you standing on her parents’ porch, cradling your phone in one hand, and something else she can’t recognize in the other.

“Hello, gorgeous.”

Your girlfriend looks at you incredulously, jaw dropped. “You’re an hour late! Wait, is that a puppy?!”

Slipping your phone in your back pocket, you step closer, both hands turning the black ball of fur to face her. The french bulldog licks her nose, and the once angry girl melts into a puddle in front of you, taking it in hers. Her screaming’s gathered a small crowd of family members behind her.

“Oh my goodness, babe. What are you doing with this cutie?”

You step closer, quickly kissing her temple. “I found him while on my way here. I decided to walk instead of taking the train and when I cut through the park this little guy was in my path. I circled the whole park asking everybody if it was their dog. And he had no name tag, so I couldn’t just leave him, and-”  You pause because Wendy’s - crying? “Baby, it’s just a puppy.”

“But he’s soooooooooooo cute,” Her words are slightly slurred, yet she goes on, looking up at you with a pout. “Can we keep him Y/N? Pretty please?” She’s scratching behind the dog’s ear, much to his delight.

“Only for today, Seungwan. I still don’t know if he belongs to someone. After the reunion, we can go to the shelter.”

She takes this as a victory, wiping away her stray tears. “Thank you Y/N. I forgive you, and I love you.”

You look at her, blushing, and watch as the gears in her head turn in realization of what she’s said. This is the first time, and it looks like neither one of you were prepared. “I-If you don’t feel the same, you don’t have to say it back. I’m sorry.”

“No, I do. I love you too, Seungwan.”

She smiles big, leaning in to kiss your lips before heading back inside, pointing at family members and introducing them to you.

Yep, she made the right decision.
