You walked down the halls, your backpack hanging loosely off of one of your shoulders. You jumped slightly as you felt a pressure along your shoulders. You turned around and saw Wendy walking just behind you, a noticeable bounce in her step.
You grinned as you watched your friend pretty much jump around you in sheer happiness,
“What’s wrong with you?”
“Why does something have to be wrong with me?” Wendy asked, each of her words spoken through one of the brightest smiles you had ever seen.
“Can’t you just let me be happy? The day is bright, my grades are good, today is just a fantastic day.”
You turned to her with a laugh, stopping in front of her and gently grabbing her shoulders,
“Stop jumping, your grades haven’t taken a hit since spring of eighth grade-” you paused once you notice a slight pout on her face,
“-which is not something we talk about. So, calm down, take a breath, and tell me what turned my best friend into a rabbit.”
Wendy nodded a moment and took a deep breath, unable to stop the grin on her face, “I asked her out, finally, got up the courage and I asked Maya out.”
You smiled carefully at her,
“And?”
“And I wouldn’t be jumping if I didn’t have a date on Friday.” She said, hitting your shoulder lightly,
“Two years of a stupid crush I never thought would go anywhere and I finally asked her out and she said yes.” she shook her head with the same smile plastered on her face,
“Today is just, it’s just a fantastic day.”
You just smiled at her, not sure what to say. You wanted to be happy for her, really you did, but you couldn’t bring any real happiness to her face.“Two years is a long time.” you agreed softly, “Especially for a crush.”
Two weeks later and you hadn’t heard a word from Wendy, none of your friends had either. You guys saw her in the hallway when she would walk past your friends and you, sometimes she’d smile and wave, and other times she would just ignore you to go to her girlfriend.
“You know, this sounds bad, but I’m really starting to hate this Maya girl.” Irene muttered, before biting into her apple. You were all sat around your regular table, you and Irene were watching Wendy and Maya while the other three were watching you two.
“You’re just jealous.” Joy teased, throwing a chip at her.
“Yeah it makes sense when Y/N says it, but you just don’t like the girlfriend because she ‘takes up too much of our friends time.’ Yeri added, air quotes around the final part to show she was using a direct quote from the older girl.
“What- why does it make sense when I say something?” You asked, interrupting what was beginning to become a familiar argument.
“Cause every person in this room knows you have a crush on Wendy.” Irene said, waving you off before turning to Yeri again.
“Everyone? Like, everyone?” You asked, your eyes set on the girl in question, who was wiping something off of her girlfriends face.
“Yeah unless they have love goggles blinding your vision.” Joy said.
“She means Wendy doesn’t know.” Seulgi translated.
“Oh, that’s-” You stopped talking as you noticed Wendy walking towards you. You grabbed Joy’s bag of chips and stuffed a handful in your mouth as she sat next to you.
She smiled at everyone like nothing had happened, and one of her arms rested lazily around your waist.
“Feel like I haven’t talked to you guys in forever.”
“Cause you haven’t.” Irene muttered.
“Shouldn’t you be with her?” Yeri teased gesturing over Wendy’s shoulders at the girls girlfriend.
You swallowed the mouthful of chips and took a deep breath, before reaching over to grab Joy’s bag of chips again. She reached forward and took it back,“I’m not letting you choke on those just because you don’t know how to deal with a crush-” she stopped and her eyes widened as she realized what she said. An odd silence settled across the table as everyone looked across at you, watching you freeze too.
“A crush?” Wendy teased, her arm squeezing around you, “You haven’t had one of those in what, two years?”
You looked at her, “Yeah, I guess I haven’t.”
“So who is it?” Wendy pushed, a teasing smile on her face. Her arm dropped from your waist as Maya sat down next to her. She hugged her and rested her head on her shoulder, her eyes still on you, expecting an answer.
You looked at her silently for a few moments, before shaking your head,“It doesn’t matter, she’s not avaliable, I’m not gonna mess that up over a crush.” you turned back to Joy and took her chips,
“And I think I can handle eating on my own.”
