~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rain poured down, soaking everything in it’s path, and in the distance, thunder grumbled, making Wendy look up from the sink where she was washing one of the pans she’d used for breakfast. She watched the rain hit the small window above the sink as she turned off the water, stalling to observe the weather outside before she had to try the pan. It wasn’t abnormal for it to rain during this time of the year, but a thunderstorm in the morning was something different. Maybe the weather was beginning to mimic her moods now.
Shaking her head to clear away the thought, she looked away from the window and grabbed the towel to begin drying off the pan. She could hear the shower still running behind her, and she glanced at the two plates of food on the stove. How long had you been in the shower? She couldn’t remember, but she hoped the food would still be warm by the time you got out. Heating it up a second time made it lose the fresh taste and she didn’t want to eat hers without you.
With a sigh, she finished trying the pan and put it on the rack to put up later, then dried her hands with the same towel before tossing it into the hamper under the counter. The shower turned off and she back towards the door before walking to the stove and picking up the plates. As she sat them on the table and turned around to get cups for the drinks, you opened the door and stepped out, rubbing a towel over your wet hair.
“You cooked breakfast?” You asked, walking into the kitchen and looking down at the table. “If you’d told me when I woke up I would have taken a faster shower.” Wendy looked down at the cups in her hands.
“I cook breakfast every time I have a day off.” You pulled out a chair and smiled at her sheepishly.
“I’m sorry. I was thinking about going with Seulgi today to help her pick out a new laptop so I forgot.” She swallowed and poured the drink into the cups slowly.
“But it’s storming outside. Are you sure it’s safe for you to be out there?” She picked up the cups and brought them back over to the table, pulling out her own seat after placing them on the table as you took a bite of the food.
“A little rain isn’t going to hurt anything.”
“You were just sick,” Wendy protested, moving her food around with her spoon. “If you’re out in the rain you might have a relapse.” You shrugged your shoulders.
“I’m sure I’ll be fine. Seulgi has an umbrella.”
“Do you really not want to spend one day with me that bad?” You looked up, surprised, but she was still staring down at her food.
“Wait. What?” She took a deep breath and shook her head. Now that she’d spoken, she couldn’t keep the words hidden in her chest from tumbling out.
“This is the first day I’ve gotten off in a really long time. For once we both have a day off. And you still want to spend it with Seulgi instead of me.” You placed your spoon down on your plate slowly, starting to understand what she was talking about. “You’re always with Seulgi. It’s always ‘Seulgi this’ and ‘Seulgi that’. I understand that she’s your close friend and all, but I’m your girlfriend. And I’d like to spend some time with you too.” You bit your lip.
“Wendy-.” She held up a hand to cut you off, shaking her head.
“Let me finish. I told myself not to be selfish because you could have friendships. But do you know how long it’s been since we’ve spent a day together? We’ve barely even talked this past month. But Seulgi is always with you. I nursed you back to health this past week, but you want to see Seulgi instead. And I thought maybe since it was so stormy today you might stay in with me and we could watch a movie or talk. Anything. But you still want to go with Seulgi.” She sniffed, wiping at a tear and blinking her eyes to try and make herself stop crying. “I’m sorry. I’m just. Tired of it, I guess.”
“No, I’m sorry.” You swallowed and twisted your hands together, food forgotten about on the table. “I didn’t know you felt this way. I’ve been being really selfish, forgetting about your feelings like that. I guess I’ve been so preoccupied with doing things with my friend that I somehow forgot that living with you doesn’t mean we can’t hang out anymore.” You glanced at her, but her head was still down. “I’ll call Seulgi right now and tell her I’m spending the day with you. We’ll work something out so I can spend time with you too in the future.” Finally, she looked up.
“Am I being selfish? Being jealous like this?” She sat back in her chair and sighed. “I just can’t help it.” You shook your head vigorously.
“No, you aren’t. I haven’t been paying as much attention to you lately. I’m really sorry. I haven’t even been thanking you for making breakfast and helping me when I’m sick and doing all the things you do for me. I’ve been really awful lately. But I really do love you.” She looked at you, eyes still watery. Quickly, you moved from your chair to wrap your arms around her tightly. After a second, she wrapped her arms around you as well, pulling you close.
“Thank you for apologizing. You know you don’t have to stop being friends with Seulgi. You know that’s not what I want. I love you both a lot.” You nodded.
“I know. I just need to pay attention to you too.” Wendy leaned her head against your shoulder and looked out the window, letting out a watery laugh after a moment.
“Maybe the weather really is based on my mood. It’s not raining as hard as it was earlier.”
“What?” She smiled at the confusion laced in your voice.
“It’s just something I thought earlier when it was storming.” You looked down at her as she shifted in your arms to look at the food. “Now the food is definitely all cold.”
“I’ll reheat it.” Reluctantly, you stepped out of the embrace. “Then we can have a movie marathon. We haven’t had one of those in a while.” Wendy smiled down at the table in front of her.
“Yeah, let’s do that. But I get to pick all the movies this time.”
