You stood in your bedroom in a t-shirt and shorts. Since recently moving to Seoul from your home country, the change in diet has caused you to lose quite a bit of weight.
You stared at yourself in the mirror. Losing weight made you feel more confident. You had always been self-conscious but since losing weight you had felt less anxious about how you looked and started loving yourself more.
“Y/N!” your mother called from the living room. She had been visiting you to see how you were getting on in a new country and was leaving soon. You walked into the living room.
“What?” you asked as you entered the room.
“I think that…” She began and then cut her self off.
“What are you wearing?” she said shocked. You looked down at yourself unsure of the issue.
“You’re too big to be wearing shorts like that. Look at your thighs! “ She said rushing over to you and pulling them down a little.
“There’s nothing wrong with them!” You exclaimed, pushing her away. She frowned and continued examining you.
“They’re bulging out!” she gasped.
“Your top is too tight as well. Look it’s showing all the lines of your stomach.” she said pulling at your top, stretching it out a little. She was always like this. No matter how well you were doing she always picked at something about you.
“I can never understand how Wendy loves a girl who doesn’t look after herself well.” Usually what she said went in one ear and out the other but this comment really got to you.
“Anyway as I was saying, I think it’s time I head off. My flights this evening and I want to look around a little more.” You stood rooted to the spot unable to move. She pecked you on the cheek and made her way to the door.
“Bye darling!” She said as if she had done nothing and strolled out of your apartment.
Tears rolled down your cheeks and chin. You quickly swiped them away and stormed into your room to put on an over sized jumper and jogging bottoms.
‘Maybe she’s right. How can Wendy love… This?’ You thought to yourself. That woman had gotten into your head once again.
When you were younger, her words hurt you more as they came from the person you loved most. But growing up with her toxic words made you immune to them.
This time you just couldn’t handle that remark.
You trudged into your kitchen and searched your cupboard for food. You usually looked to food for comfort but this time you stopped yourself, deciding against it.
“I’d be better off if I starved.” you said to yourself, slamming the cupboard door and dragged yourself back to the living room. You slouched onto your soft, brown sofa and lied down.
‘I don’t want to think about her right now.’ You thought to yourself. How Ironic? You couldn’t stop thinking of her poisonous words.
A while later you heard a knock on the door.
‘I’m not expecting anyone.’ you thought to yourself. You pushed yourself off the sofa and walked over to the door.
“Who is it?” you asked cautiously.
“Wendy!” your girlfriend’s excitement could be heard through the door.
“I don’t want to see you right now.” you said sternly.
“Why not?” she asked sounding disappointed.
“Because I don’t. Just go home.” You said sliding down the door and sitting on the floor.
“Y/N… I’m not leaving till you tell me what’s wrong.” Wendy said sitting down on your door mat. “You are my girlfriend. I will love and support you no matter what and you know that. So just tell me.”
You both stayed silent. Both unsure of what to say until you found the words.
“Why do you love me?” you said quietly.
“What?” Wendy asked unsure of what she heard.
“I said why do you love me?” you repeated your question.
“Ummm… I love you because you’re funny, smart, you always know how to make me feel better. You’re also extremely kind, not just to your friends and family but to strangers too. You’re the most selfless person I’ve ever met. At times you can be a little controlling but it just shows that you care about whatever you’re trying to control.” She said gently. “Not to mention you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid my eyes on. Even though Irene seems to think it’s her.” You both giggled.
“You really think I’m pretty?” you asked hesitantly.
“Absolutely.”
“Did you think I was pretty when I was… Big?” you asked.
“Is that what this is all about?” Wendy asked sighing. You didn’t answer.
“I’ll take that as a yes. Open the door you silly goose.” You stood up and unlocked the door letting Wendy in. She grabbed your hand and sat you down on the rug in your living room; positioning herself in front of you. She stared into your eyes making sure you paid attention to everything she was saying.
“I love your weight now, I loved your weight when I met you and I will love whatever weight you’ll be in the future.” Wendy said sincerely. She grabbed your hands and gripped onto them tightly.
“I didn’t date you for your looks. I dated you for the person that you are inside. However you’ve always looked stunning. I love you just the way you are.” She cupped you cheek; stroking her thumb softly against your cheek.
“What’s brought all this up?” She asked.
“I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt earlier and my mum told me I’m too fat to be wearing them. Usually her comments don’t bother me but then she said, she doesn’t understand how you can love a girl that doesn’t look after herself.” You said looking down.
“Look at me right now. You don’t need to change. You only change if it’s something you want not what other people want. You don’t have to make anyone happy other than yourself.” she stopped talking and squeezed your hands tightly.
“I love you. She can keep her opinions of my beliefs to herself.” she leaned forward and pecked you on the lips.
She pulled you up off the ground and pulled you into a hug.
“Let’s go out for a little while.” She said letting you go, pushing you towards your bedroom.
“Put on something that you want to wear.”
