Kit found himself face-to-face to Barnabas Hale.

"Well hello, young Shadowhunter," Barnabas sneered. "Having fun in the Clave?"

"Yes, especially because you aren't in it," said Kit as he brought the Mortal Sword down.

But he was stopped by Magnus Bane, and was about to protest when everyone's weapons clattered to the floor. Magnus looked extremely pleased with himself and dusted his hands.

Alexander Lightwood let go of his bowstring with a twang, and the arrow shot through and shattered a bell with deadly precision. "Shut up, you all!" Alec said, then seemed to realise that Consuls weren't supposed to say that. "I meant, could everybody please take a seat, including our Inquisitor and esteemed Downworlder guests?"

Everyone probably understood how close Alec was to his breaking point. The shuffle of feet could be heard as everyone scrambled to find a space in the now crowded Hall. Kit sought out Ty with his gaze and shoved his way through the crowd.

He took Ty's hand and sat down beside him. "Don't worry, Ty. I'm here."

Ty shot him a weak smile.

Inquisitor Balogh gathered his robes again. Barnabas Hale had his face twisted in impatience as he looked up at Balogh expectantly. Finally, Kit got it, and Ty seemed to get it too, for the both of them looked at each other in realisation:

Balogh and Hale were working together.

Ty whispered, "Watson, we have to find a way to expose them. Or they will wreak havoc in the Shadowhunter world and Downworld alike."

"I know how. Just play along, Sherlock," said Kit, and Ty suddenly gave him a quick peck on the cheek. That soothed down all of Kit's worries; he had been afraid Ty would be annoyed that he was turning into a mini-Sherlock.

"Christopher Jonathan Herondale! Return Maellartach at once!" exclaimed Inquisitor Balogh, shaking his hand in rage.

Sullenly, Kit grabbed the blade and dumped it onto its stand, feeling the ache from where it had been. He felt dozens of pairs of eyes on him as he made his way back to his seat.

"Now, let us begin. Tiberius Nero Blackthorn, make your way up again, and hold the Mortal Sword. Any interferences will be dealt with extremely severely. Let the trial begin!"

Julian got up from his seat just as Ty made his way up the stairs. A plan had already formed in his head, without Ty getting injured or anything, he just needed Julian to stop. Luckily, he was seated just in front of Julian. He quickly turned around and motioned for Julian sit down. Quietly, he explained his plan hurriedly, and Julian let out a long breath before giving him a thumbs-up.

Just before Ty reached the Mortal Sword, Kit leapt up onto his seat and yelled, "Jessamine!"

Everyone froze, including Ty. Pretty much no one knew who Jessamine was, and those who did, like Great-Aunt Marjorie, weren't present. Only Ty knew what he was doing, and he smiled reassuringly at Kit. Jessamine floated over the heads of the Shadowhunters and Downworlders with an irritated expression, and Kit knew that only Jace and the warlocks could see her. However, Magnus somehow managed to keep the warlocks' mouths shut.

The warlocks struggled, but no one noticed them. Jace gave Kit a quick wink.

Kit muttered something to Jessamine, making sure only she could hear him. She nodded begrudgingly, saying that she "didn't know why she even bothered". He gave an easy smile, apologising before he sat down again. Kit knew that to the others, he would have simply seemed insane. But they wouldn't have minded.

Ty turned towards the Sword again, reaching out to grab it when a guard tumbled clumsily towards him, grabbing Maellartach and tossing it to Inquisitor Balogh.

Stunned, Balogh did the only thing his instincts told him—he grabbed the Sword.

Waves of murmuring swept through the Hall, but Kit stood up, shouting in his loudest voice:

"What is your full name?"

Caught by surprise, and compelled to tell the truth by the Sword in his hands, Balogh replied, "Lazlo Balogh."

"Then answer, Lazlo Balogh," said Kit, though he didn't feel quite as brave as his tone. All eyes were focused on him. The guard had slumped to the floor, after Jessamine had left his body. "Are you working with Barnabas Hale?"

Kit had no experience at all, but he had witnessed quite a few trials to know how it conducted.

Lazlo Balogh grit his teeth. He gave no response, but Kit could see him begin to crumble. There was a loud gasp from the audience, but Kit pressed on. "Lazlo Balogh, former head of the Budapest Institute, current Inquisitor, explain yourself."

"Yes—yes, I admit it! Barnabas told me that I would gain more power and influence if I showed how much power I had. He had been tricked by Christopher Herondale, Tiberius Blackthorn and Drusilla Blackthorn and he wanted revenge. He approached me and filed a violation of the Accords. Technically it wasn't a violation, but he said he would even give me more power in the Shadow Market. I agreed."

Lazlo suddenly shut his mouth, after the barrage of words that flowed out like the dam to a river broken. He had submitted to the Mortal Sword in the end.

Alec stood up. "As Inquisitor, accepting a bribe is against the Accords. Ironically. You will be stripped of your title and sentenced to two years of community service. Now, guards, take the Mortal Sword from him. We will now choose an Inquisitor."

Kit sat down. There was flurry of activity as everyone said whispered their choice into the jar. Kit thought for a while, then whispered, "Fairchild. Clarissa Fairchild."

He passed it to Ty, who had plopped down right beside Kit like earlier. Then it was passed on, and finally, in huge letters, the new Inquisitor was announced.

Clarissa Adele Fairchild

There was a round of applause as Clary blushed and stood up.

A smile finally broke out across Alec's face.

"Now," he said, as everyone stood up and cheered. "May we welcome Inquisitor Fairchild!"
