Kit froze.

Ty was standing there, the knife inching closer to his neck and in a fraction of a second, he would be dead.

After waiting so long to finally kiss him and claim him as his own, they wouldn't even last a day.

"Who summoned me?" Hale snarled, waving the knife dangerously close to Ty's throat.

Kit plucked up his courage and said, "Me. I summoned you. Now let Ty go."

Barnabas sneered. "I know you love him, Shadowhunter. I know you do. Now, why would I let up any chance of torturing your mortal souls?"

"Nonsense," said Kit. "I hate him. He's so weird, and any kisses we had meant nothing. I only kissed him so that I could brag to all my friends how disgusting he tastes. I only saved him and asked you to let him go because I'm a Shadowhunter, and I'm supposed to protect my fellow Shadowhunters."

He could feel the burning glares everyone had sent him, but Ty didn't even so much as flinch. Jonathan grinned.

"Thank you for reaffirming that, Christopher." Barnabas smirked at Ty. "Aww, how sad, Tiberius. You're so unwanted. A good thing too, because there'll be no one to mourn for you when you die."

He cackled, and then looked at Kit. Kit forced himself to show nothing. Not how disgusted he felt with himself after saying all those things about Ty.

Barnabas slashed Ty's forearm, but Kit knew it didn't hurt for Ty. He schooled his features into one of nonchalance, looking disdainfully at Barnabas. "Really, Hale? I said it once, I'll say it again, I do not like Ty. At all."

Jonathan guffawed. "A likely story, Herondale. Just moments ago, you were weeping over his nearly-dying body and begging him to come back to you."

"Oh, please," said Kit, waving a hand to show how much he didn't care. "I only did that on an act, so that I can continue to taunt him behind his back. You have no idea how much effort and patience it took to put up with him. If he's dead, all the better."

"Then why didn't you leave him to die?"

Kit was getting frustrated. "Like I said, I had to put up an act. Besides, his brother was right there. Don't I need to, say, put up a good show?"

With a sniff, Hale flung Ty aside. The boulder of worry Kit didn't even know he was carrying fell off, leaving him a bit happier. Ty was alright.

"I like you, Christopher," said Jonathan. "Nothing like your cousin. He's a sucker for love."

"I know, right? I don't even know why I came to rescue him. It was all a show." It hurt Kit to say all those words. His throat burned and flamed. "It disgusts me to even be seen with these people."

Hale grinned at Jonathan. "I think he's a keeper."

Jonathan nodded at him. "Yes, I say we bring him with us. But first, let me exact my revenge and kill his cousin, then the girl. In fact, I'll kill them all."

All. Ty. Julian. Emma. Jace. Clary. Simon. Isabelle. Magnus. Alec.

All the people who had protected him when he needed it the most, who had guided him and loved and who he had come to love.

All of them.

And then they would take Kit with them.

He had really, really, really screwed up. It was all his fault. Ideas had already begun forming in his head. Yes, he would do that. But if he wanted to do it, he had to keep the act up. Meaning, he had to say more hurtful words to the people who had come to be his family. Yet, if he wanted to keep them alive, he had to hurt them. This was so wrong.

Did Julian do this all the time? Because just doing it for a few seconds already had Kit exhausted. He hated it. He suddenly felt an immense wave of pity for Julian wash over him, but now was no time for that. He had to put his plan into action, and fast. Before anyone else got hurt.

"Barnabas," Kit said, in the evillest, most calculating voice he could think up. "Jonathan. Wouldn't it be more fun to torture them first, and then kill them? See their agonised, pained faces before their last breath leaves them?"

"Christopher is right," said Barnabas, and whoosh of relief left Kit. "We ought to play around with them. Enjoy torturing the Clave's slaves while we can."

"Very well," shrugged Jonathan. He walked towards Julian, pulling out a dagger. Julian looked up at him in annoyance.

"Barnabas, aren't you going to join in the fun? I'll take care of whoever's left, but you can take your pick."

Barnabas grinned manically and turned in the direction of Simon. "I knew I was right when I decided to take you in."

Kit smiled, but it was so forced and so... so painful. He unsheathed a dao and marched straight at Alec.

"Oh, Alec, I suppose I could make things easier by slashing the right side of your neck. You know, the spot where it hurts most?"

Alec cocked his head in confusion at first, then seemed to get it and nodded. He gave Kit one of his small and rare smiles, the ones that seemed to make everything much better.

"Less talk, more murder, Christopher," snarled Barnabas as he prepared to lunge at Simon.

"I want to elongate the torture period. You know, build up the suspense?" said Kit hastily.

Barnabas grumbled something under his breath that Kit couldn't hear, but there were more important things on his mind at the moment.

Like how to stop Jonathan, who was holding Julian with a knife at his neck, from approaching him and foiling his plans.

Magnus' breathing was slowing.
