17 | Explorations Always Go Wrong

Kit awoke with his head on hard concrete. He didn't know how he ended up falling asleep, but he did know that he had gone off to sleep halfway through thinking about what Alec had said.

It was probably still early. No one was up yet, Kit realised.

He decided to explore the cave. Kit felt along the walls, running his hands over rock and hardness, until his palm came over something that didn't quite feel so much like the rest of the cave.

He pushed down, once, but hard, and the rock seemed to glow softly under his touch. Kit looked at it with a strange wonder. It started shifting, and then it sank back into the wall, disappearing completely.

Then, that entire face of the cave slid back, revealing an entirely different world behind. Instead of the bareness of the cave, he found a garden, and Kit realised abruptly and with amazement that he had found the garden of Eden.

For there was a flaming sword turning in all directions, like in the book of Genesis, and there was a shining tree that radiated life. Of course, it was the tree of life, after all. And there was another tree, what Kit presumed was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Eden, Edom... it made sense. This was where God had created Adam, Lilth and Eve. Where Lilth had come to make her home.

Instead of telling the others, he decided to survey what mess he had gotten himself into this time. He stepped further, but the moment he did, the cave's walls slid back behind him.

Shit.

He no choice but to keep moving, then. Astounded by the fiery sword, he reached out for it, expecting it to continue with its business and possibly burn him, but instead, it stopped.

The hilt pointed, awaiting, towards his outstretched hand. He reached out, and closed his fingers firmly around the handle. He could feel the fire melt into him, filling him up, but he knew it wasn't heavenly fire or anything like that. It was different, but he didn't how or why or what.

Confused, he held the sword and stepped into the garden. Kit walked towards the tree of life, and, feeling a strange compulsion to do so, he placed his palm on this tree, and a rune was instantly illuminated.

It was the rune of angelic power.

The sword still clutched in his left hand, he pulled out the stele Alec had, perhaps by accident, left on the floor of his cave. Slowly, he began to trace the rune on the tree onto his arm, though his hands were shaky.

The rune stood starkly contrasting from his skin, but unlike the other runes he had, this rune was golden. This rune had energy flowing downwards like a river towards the sword he was holding.

The large shadow of the tree fell over him.

Suddenly, Kit felt himself being lifted slowly into the air.

Speak, a voice sounded into his head. It was like the way Silent Brothers communicate, except this voice was imperious and commanding. It demanded respect and the truth. Could it be compared to the Mortal Sword? Kit didn't know. Why are you here? How did you get in, and who are you?

"I am here because why not," said Kit, raising his chin defiantly up at the tree like the stubborn Shadowhunter he was. "I got in because I am awesome and the sword likes me. My name is Christopher Jonathan Herondale, which is the most uncreative name ever. Now who the hell are you again?"

The voice was unamused when it spoke again. Was the owner a girl, or a boy? Kit couldn't tell. Christopher Herondale, leave at once. You are not welcome here. I do not know why the sword took a liking to you, but I have certainly not. I am who I Am. Now go!

"Okay, okay, chill. Are you God? Because I remember him saying that line," Kit said, knowing he was just being plain annoying. "'I am who I Am.'" Kit wriggled his eyebrows.

Child, I am a servant of God. I convey his messages and I am the Angel Gabriel. Go now.

"Oh, I used your name in a battle with Ty! Thanks for helping, appreciated that—"

GO!

Kit shrugged and held up his hands—which caused the sword to drop and fall to the floor. He scrambled to the cave wall, before saying in an extremely irritating voice, "A little help here, please?"

The voice gave a loud sigh before the walls opened and Kit dashed through. Fun, he thought.

Then he looked down at his hands and gave a loud, unnecessary gasp.

Inscribed on his arm, and quickly disappearing was:

This boy has been Marked by the sword of Eden, and the will of Angel Gabriel. Henceforth the Angels shall owe him a debt, and henceforth the sword shall be his slave.

"Cool," mused Kit. "I now have an army of Angels owing me service and a sword that I can call upon at will. Cool."

Where the words had been, was a rune Kit had never seen before. Perhaps it was an ancient rune, or perhaps Kit's knowledge was just limited, but regardless, he knew he now had lots of power.

But how could did he call for the sword? Did he just think of it, and it appeared? He thought of himself saying, "Come to me, o sword, who's name I do not know", and he almost laughed despite himself.

Come to me, o sword, he started, but before he was finished, the sword appeared in his hands, trusting and heavy. He grinned. Then the sword, seeming to know it was summoned for fun, disappeared, leaving behind an air of annoyance. Kit had pissed off a lot of heavenly beings today.

He was going to annoy the sword more, but a message bathed in flames, what the Nephilim probably called fire messages, appeared in front of him. He took it cautiously, knowing that it should not have been possible for it to appear because he was in Edom and angelic power should not be able to work in Edom.

He unfolded it, feeling the blood in his veins turn to ice as he scanned the paper again and again.

For on it was the words:

We Are Rising.
