Jace caressed Clary's face lightly. Kit turned away to puke.

"Come on," he muttered. "I didn't come here for your couple moments."

"You just ruined it," said Jace rather crossly. "Thanks."

"Yeah, thank goodness," corrected Kit. Jace rolled his eyes. "I came here, actually, to ask you something."

"Speak," said Jace. "Or I will impale you with a stick. You, my friend, have committed a heinous crime by interrupting—"

"Shut up," Kit said, wondering how on earth Jace was a Herondale. Oh, he forgot to say by the Angel again. That just made him think of Ty, so he decided against it. "Barnabas Hale raised Jonathan Wayland, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't purely for fun or something as simply as revenge against Dru and I." And Ty. He swallowed.

"Your point is...?" said Clary, leaning forward.

"He's doing something. Working with necromancy. Somehow or another, he seems to be... searching for something. What if there weren't just the Lost Book of the White and the Black Volume of the Dead? What if there was another book, Hale found it existed, and it's the most powerful book of all?"

"It makes sense." Jace scratched his head. "I'll have to consult Alec."

"It makes sense," said Kit, "because normally books come in trilogies. There won't just be two books and that's it. We shouldn't ask Alec. We need to find Magnus."

"I can help with that," said Clary, standing up. Jace rushed to her side to support her, but she waved him away and pulled out a stele. Quickly, she began tracing the strokes of a Portal rune, and soon enough, the familiar, glimmering mass of chaos appeared.

Kit stepped through first, hearing Clary and Jace's footsteps padding after him. They were in Magnus' apartment.

"To what luck do I owe," said Magnus sarcastically when he saw them, "for having three Shadowhunters grace my presence?"

Kit rolled his eyes. "Mr Bane, sir, we think there is a possible book that has not been found. There is the Lost Book of the White, the Black Volume of the Dead, and I have strong suspicions there is another one. I also think it's the most powerful one."

Magnus became serious. "You think Barnabas Hale wants the last book?"

"Yes," said Kit. Magnus was incredibly smart. But not as smart as Ty. God, why did everything keep coming back to Ty? "Do you know what it is?"

"I may have something. Allow me to check. Wait here."

Magnus turned and walked down a corridor, leaving him, Jace and Clary in an extremely awkward silence.

"So," said Jace nervously. Nervously? Did Jace get nervous? "You and Ty?"

Kit sucked in a breath. "No."

Jace nodded and started whistling, earning himself a glare from Clary.

"I found something," Magnus said, hurrying back with a thick book in his hand. Kit wondered how he managed to find it so fast. "You were right. There's a third book. It's called the Gold Texts of the Living. Your theory was correct. It's the most powerful, because it contains magic for both the living and the dead."

"What do you mean?" asked Clary.

"It's a bit difficult to explain, so I'll use an example. Have you ever heard of quantum superposition? The object is in a state of simultaneously being dead and alive. It means that the magic, whoever it's used on, can cause the person to be both in a state of dead and alive at the same time. The person is dead and alive, making him unkillable," said Magnus. "The book once belonged to the Waylands before Valentine burned them all. Imagine the destruction Hale could cause once he found the Text."

Kit listened in fascination. "So you mean to say that Barnabas Hale is using revenge as a cover for what he is actually trying to find?"

"Yes," said Magnus gravely. "Currently its exact location is unknown, but because it used to belong to the Waylands, so long as Hale gets his filthy hands on Jonathan's blood, he can easily reactivate the Text."

"Reactivate?" Jace said, who had been quiet all this time. "There is a need for activation?"

"The Text was protected by Josiah Wayland before he died; he engaged several warlocks and the Text is now heavily protected by several spells. However, by casting a spell with Wayland blood, the protection can be waivered, allowing the warlock to track the book."

"But why would Hale want someone unkillable? Why would he want to take over the world? He doesn't seem like that sort of person," Clary said.

Magnus furrowed his eyebrows. For once, Kit thought, he doesn't have the answers. And I do.

"I know," said Kit. "He wants to reclaim the Shadow Market. He just needs someone to do all the dirty work for him, and he can make his return. He wants his power back from Hypatia Vex."

"In that case," said Jace, "We have to find the Gold Texts of the Living before Barnabas Hale does. We need a plan, right now. I'm going to call Alec."

As if summoned, the door came suddenly crashing open and a very breathless Alec burst in.

"Come quick," he said. "Barnabas Hale's cell is empty."
