Jace pushed Clary slightly towards the elevated platform where Alec stood, offering her an encouraging smile.
She walked towards the platform, ready to go through the ceremony and receive her robes. Clary looked especially delighted.
But before anyone could process anything, she touched the sword and collapsed. Dark fissures began to spread about her body, and she eventually burst into dark liquid Kit recognised as ichor. Then Clary winked out of existence.
He saw people begin murmuring and questioning Alec. Alec looked confused, Jace looked horrified but the puzzlement on Simon's face couldn't be missed. He touched his parabatai rune lightly, then said something to Izzy Kit didn't hear.
Magnus walked over to where "Clary" had been, then touched the ichor and worked his magic. "An Eidolon," he muttered, then reported it back to Alec.
He felt Ty squish his hand. "What's happening?" asked Ty, and the terrified look on Ty's face broke his heart.
"It's okay, Ty," began Kit, rubbing circles over Ty's hand. "It's okay—"
"Shadowhunters," said Alec in the commanding voice he always used when addressing an audience. Magnus once told Kit that he secretly loved it. "Clary Fairchild is missing. We are organising a search team now. Please stay calm."
More murmurs rippled through the Hall.
The noise grew, and Kit led Ty slowly out of Hall, careful not to let anyone come too close. Ty drew in a deep breath as they stepped outside.
"Clary is missing. Something happened—Ty, you're the smartest person I know. You ought to join the search team."
"I... I can't Kit," said Ty, sounding ever so unsure of himself. Kit wished Ty would just have a little more confidence; it would do him so much good. He blushed furiously at Kit's compliment. "Besides, I'm sure there are smarter Shadowhunters than I."
"I love you Ty and you're amazing and talented so why don't you go show everyone what you can do?" The words rushed themselves out of Kit's mouth before he could even stop them, and he was pretty sure it was the first time he had said "I love you" to Ty. The words tasted unfamiliar in his mouth, but right. Very right.
Ty looked down at him, his face flushed. "You—"
"Shush."
Kit silenced him with a soft kiss, and it stayed soft and gentle and feathery and light, perfect for them.
They finally pulled apart and it was just right, because Julian came bursting through the doors and he took one long look at them. "Magnus managed to track Clary down," said Julian, somehow managing to shoot them sharp glances at the same time.
"Really?"
"Yeah. She's at Wayland manor."
Kit sure as heck didn't know where that was, but Ty looked horrified, so he went along with it.
"Why is she there?" asked Kit.
"We don't know. But we just received a fire message for Jace and Jace only to go there, so we know it isn't as simple as we thought." Julian's eyes shifted. Kit couldn't read it. He had always admired Julian for being one of the few whose expressions he could never read. Even if he could, he never knew if Julian meant it. "Magnus, Alec, Simon, Isabelle, Emma and I will be stationed outside, waiting for Jace. He has a ring, that if he shatters, will alert Magnus immediately. I need you guys to take care of the others. Helen, Aline, Mark and Cristina will be working on investigations, so it'll just be you guys, Dru and Tavvy. Thanks a lot, Kit."
Then he rushed back into the Hall.
"We're not going to stay," both of them said as they turned towards each other. They both grinned at each other. The flat, sharp daggers that were Ty's eyes stared into his own, and Kit fell in love all over again. Ty's charcoal hair stood stark against his pale, paper-like skin, and the terrifying look in Ty's eyes made Kit thank the Angel that he didn't offend Ty that day went he met him.
They quickly formulated a plan together, and hid in a bush as everyone involved in the operation gathered outside the Hall and Portalled to Wayland manor. Then they secretly dove through the Portal with everyone else.
Kit and Ty arrived on the other end, thankfully cloaked by the darkness. They stood in an alley. Both instinctively pressed themselves against the wall.
"Okay," they heard Jace say. "This alley leads to right outside the manor. I go in, and you guys wait outside."
Kit realised his cousin was too worried about Clary to even joke or attempt to be sarcastic. The group walked steadily into the daylight, Kit and Ty trailing behind, a huge house shape looming up in front of them. Jace gave a crooked smile and went in.
Magnus, Alec and the others assumed positions in front of the house.
Ty launched a rock at the house. A classic trick, but enough for a distraction. The group made signs at each other before Simon went in to check.
Then Kit got up and glamoured himself as Simon. He knew that it wouldn't work much, but in a time like this, no one really noticed.
"Hey," Kit said. "Did you guys see the movement?"
"What are you doing here, Simon?" said Julian, narrowing his eyes at Kit. "You're not Simon."
"I walked into a Portal, I think. I'm not sure," Kit fibbed. This was harder than he had expected. "I have to go back in to check. You guys stay outside."
He expected Julian to pursue the matter, but he simply shrugged and said, "Okay."
Then Kit walked into the manor again. He went to the back of the manor and unlatched the back gate, allowing Ty, who had snuck a whole round to the back and was waiting, into the Wayland manor.
They ducked just as Simon came around the corner, probably on his way out.
With a swift movement, Ty approached Simon quietly and knocked him out.
Then they put his body by the entrance and headed towards where they heard Jace yelling.
