"We intend to place finding Ash as our top priority," said Julian, leaning forward. They all stood at the doors of the Institute. "We'll need the help of Dru for that."

Kit could see the worry etched across Julian's features; how scared he'd been when he'd found out that Dru was missing. Something that only appeared when his family—which included Emma—was gone.

Emma placed her hand on his shoulder, offering him her support. "Don't worry. We'll find her."

Julian nodded at her appreciatively. "Okay, so we'll all follow this—" he held up one of Dru's combs, "—and find her. From there we'll take something of Ash's, then track Ash down."

They gathered around Julian as he drew out his stele. A Tracking rune quickly formed on the object. Kit could see the tug on the comb; Julian stumbled after it as it pulled him out of the Institute gates.

Magnus stopped Julian. Magnus waved a hand over the comb, then opened a Portal. "This will take us all directly to the location," he explained as he ushered them in. "Saves us the trouble."

Kit stumbled into the Portal, opening his eyes to a completely different landscape. He was in front of a dirty, rundown and clearly abandoned warehouse. What was Dru doing here?

He saw the Portal close behind Magnus, then pulled out his whip. Kit could feel the seraph blades' cool metal against his skin, tucked away into the waistband of his jeans. They were all decked out in battle gear.

Julian held his crossbow in front of them protectively, Emma by his side with Cortana. Ty stood beside Kit, a dao in his hand. Bringing up the rear were Alec with his bow and arrows, and Magnus, blue flares in his hands.

Climbing into the warehouse through a window and opening the door from the inside for them, Julian held a finger to his lips as they crept into the warehouse, which was surprisingly unprotected.

There were three floors in the warehouse. The first one was empty, but there was definitely something beyond the stairs. Kit could see the shadows cast onto the wall by lights.

There was definitely someone, for there wouldn't be lights otherwise. A female's figure could be seen clearly suspended in the air. He noticed Julian stiffening, Julian's knuckles turning whiter.

Kit felt his Silence rune on his back activate—it had been put there by Ty. They formed a neat line and stole along the grime-covered walls. Why did they always have to fight in dirty, abandoned places? Why couldn't kidnappers pick a nicer location, like a fancy fighting house?

Distracted by his thoughts, Kit accidentally stepped on a rock that came from nowhere. What the heck? Great, now even rocks were against them?

Even his Silence rune could not save him now. Hales' "Who's there?" rang out through the ironic silence in the warehouse. There was some sort of magic aura in the air, then a dragging sensation and they were pulled into the light.

Kit could make out Dru through the sudden flashes of light. He could see her shadowy curves, the ones that she had always tried to cover up, but Kit thought they were pretty. They were Dru, so they were pretty.

He'd always treated Dru like a younger sister, and to him she was one, having had no kin in the world after Johnny Rook's death. Seeing her like this, all tied up, dirt streaks running down her cheek, hurt him so much that he wanted to take Barnabas Hale and smash his head against the wall twelve times over.

He could see remnants and proof of the fight she had put up. Dru had a split lip, a bruised cheek and her hair was sticking out in odd directions. Her knee was scraped; her knuckles bloodied.

"You guys are really annoying, you know that?" said Hale, rolling his eyes, as if they were the ones who had done the wrong. It was ridiculous. "Keep messing up my plans... come on, just leave me alone!"

"Not when you're breaking the Law," said Alec in his Inquisitor voice. "Give us Dru back, and we'll let you go."

"No, you seriously think I'll do that when she's the key to getting the Gold Texts? You're dumber than I thought, honestly—woah there, chill with the arrows!"

Alec had fired an arrow right at him, but Hale had caught it in a ball of magic. "You want to play mean, huh?" Hale tossed the arrow aside. "Two can play at that."

He shot a beam of magic at Alec, which Alec avoided by somersaulting and landing behind Magnus. Magnus acted like a shield between Alec and Barnabas, creating a protective layer of magic between them.

Meanwhile, Julian and Emma had stealthily crossed over to where Dru was. They tried to reach her, but there was a magic barrier surrounding Dru. Kit hurried over, mustering enough strength to shoot a blast of faerie magic.

It wasn't much considering he was sort of drained, but it was something.

The barrier weakened enough for Emma to slip Cortana in. Her sword sliced away at the ropes, cutting through it like it was butter. Dru stood up, but Hale seized her with his magic towards him.

"You actually think I would have let you get away with my key?" It was disgusting, the way he spoke of Dru as an object. "Over my dead body."

"You're going to be dead alright," muttered Julian, firing arrows at Hale from his crossbow.

A tirade of arrows showered onto Hale as Alec and Julian notched arrow after arrow onto their bows. Ty pulled out throwing stars, taking careful aim and hurling them at Hale at an amazing speed.

Kit didn't want to feel useless, what with everyone attacking Hale and Magnus holding off him, so Kit summoned the blade, which he had named Morton, and charged at Hale. The fun part of it was that he could both fight and use magic, which was a huge advantage.

Breaking the barriers as he went along, Kit slashed at the air in front of him, reaching Hale is almost no time. Hale looked at him, his eyes widening in surprise, before Kit had put himself behind Hale and Morton to Hale's neck.

"Let go of Dru," he hissed into Hale's ear, "or you'll be sorry you ever tried."

Hale gave a cry of pain as Kit dug the sword slightly into his neck. His hands moving at lightning speed, a whirling mass of a Portal appeared in front of Kit and Hale.

"I said, over my dead body!" cried Hale as he attempted to free himself from Kit and drag Dru into the Portal.

He managed it.

Julian's scream of anger echoed into the silence as his sister vanished into the Portal.
