"Shadowhunters!"
Alec's voice rang throughout the Hall.
"Downworlders! Today we gather in presence of our Angel Raziel, in the trial for Barnabas Hale. We have seen him wreak havoc in Alicante, disrupting our lives with his plans which were fortunately foiled with the help of Julian Blackthorn, Emma Carstairs, Magnus Bane, Simon Lovelace, Isabelle Lightwood, Tiberius Blackthorn, Christopher Herondale and myself. We thank these people for their assistance."
A round of applause sounded. Kit moved his hands together numbly, not feeling any emotion or pain. In fact, the act of clapping his hands was done so robotically he didn't even know what he was doing. All he knew was that Ty had chosen to seat himself on the opposite side of Hall. Not anywhere near Kit.
"Now, may we skip the pleasantries and bring forth the accused."
Hale shuffled onto the thing, shoved forward by the Centurion guards. He wore a scowl which was noticed by everyone and there were some "boos" from the crowd. Kit was a silent ball of fury. It was Hale who caused him to fall out with Ty. Screw them all.
"Barnabas Hale, you stand guilty of treason to the Clave and violation of the Accords. Do you plead guilty to this?"
Hale sneered. "So what if I plead guilty? What can you do to me?"
"Barnabas Hale, answer my question directly!" Alec's voice was thunder. He was really furious.
"Yes, I plead guilty!" Hale smiled manically. "There will be more after me, slaves of the Clave!'
Then Hale's warlock mark shone and he let out a roar of laughter. He laughed and laughed until it wasn't a laugh anymore, and Kit realised he was choking. Hale grinned and spat, "They are coming."
And he collapsed to the ground. Immediately, guards ran to check on him, and confirmed that he was still alive. Alec sent him to a warded cell, asking Magnus to follow in case anything happened.
Instantly the crowd started protesting and asking what had happened, but Alec gestured for silence. "We will begin investigations over Barnabas Hale's earlier statements. Please come to me if you have any information or if you are up to join the investigations. Shadowhunters and Downworlders welcome. Selection is not guaranteed. You are all dismissed. Today's session ends here."
Alec's dad would have been proud, thought Kit. Alec was really the best choice for Consul.
Then he thought, would dad be proud of me? Would he want me to be pining after Shadowhunters and being a relative to one of the greatest Shadowhunters known?
No.
His dad would have disowned him if Johnny Rook even knew the tip of the iceberg. His dad hated Shadowhunters with a vengeance, though why, Kit didn't exactly know. He did know the look of the disappointment his dad would have given him, the one that said, You aren't fit to be my son.
Should he have chosen another path? Lead a normal life, fake it that he was simply a mundane with the Sight. That would be so much easier. But it would be a life without Ty.
Did he want that? He wasn't sure anymore.
Shadowhunters and Downworlders filed out of the Hall. He caught up with Jace, who was on his way to see Clary at the Silent City. Clary was on her way to recovery, much better than compared to when Jonathan took her.
"Hey, um, Jace?"
"Yeah?" said Jace.
"Why do we use the Accords Hall now? I thought we used to use the Gard?" Ty had taught him that. Kit heart ached terribly.
"The Gard was destroyed," said Jace simply. "Annabel left too much demonic residual. The Gard's angelic power was ruined and couldn't be used anymore. It's now in ruins. Originally, the Clave intended to demolish the Gard completely, but too many people protested because there are many memories in there. So, it was just left there to rot."
Kit nodded. "Can I come with you to see Clary?"
Jace raised an eyebrow, but nodded. Kit knew why. Jace didn't know about he and Ty's fight. Basically, he didn't know that Kit was friendless, heartbroken and extremely bored.
He followed after Jace, who led him into the Silent City. The Silent City was really a complicated maze of tunnels and winding corridors that led to various rooms which were filled with god knew what. Ty told him that Jem was once a famous Silent Brother who went by the name of Brother Zachariah. Kit found it very hard to imagine Jem as a Silent Brother.
But that was what Ty said, and Ty was never wrong. Never, Kit reminded himself.
Never. Never. Never.
The words echoed around in his head and he didn't even realise he and Jace had arrived at their destination until he promptly crashed into Jace's behind.
Jace gave him a weird look and muttered, "Herondales."
"You're a Herondale too," Kit pointed out. Gosh, were all Herondales this dumb? Then Kit realised abruptly that he was a Herondale as well. Dang it.
"But I don't go diving headfirst into people's butts," retorted Jace.
Kit gave him an extremely suspicious look. "Not even Clary's?"
At this, Jace went very red and mumbled something inaudible under his breath. He turned around and twisted the doorknob, revealing Clary who instantly sat up at the sight of Jace. Kit really wished Ty would do that. Clary looked kind of cute. Ty would probably look even cuter.
Enough. Kit pushed those disturbing, sexy thoughts out of his head.
Meanwhile, in the depths of the Bone City, the hinges of Hale's cell began to pop open.
