Barnabas Hale was gone. That meant he was one step ahead of them.
"We need to find Hale. Now," said Magnus, throwing on an expensive coat and opening a Portal, then to Alec he said: "I'll explain it all to you later, honey."
"He's going to find Jonathan," Jace said, making his way towards the Portal.
"It'll take him and us awhile," said Kit meekly. "I sent Jonathan to Edom."
"YOU WHAT?" yelled Magnus, Jace and Clary.
"I had to stop him," protested Kit. "I threw the powder at him and sent him back to Edom."
"Damn it," said Magnus. "You know what? Never mind. Let's just go meet everyone."
Alec was silent, Kit noticed. He trusted Magnus. But Ty didn't trust him. Screw it, he was thinking of Ty again.
Kit had gone through Portals so many times, the whirlwind-like feeling was so natural to him. He landed perfectly on the ground when he tumbled out. And Ty was right in front of him.
He gulped and said, "Hey."
But Ty looked right past him at Magnus. "I heard you discovered some information. Care to share it?"
"Actually," said Magnus, "Kit discovered it. Why don't I let Kit share it with you?"
Ty turned to face him properly, his expression so cold it could have frozen him right there and then. "Speak, then, Christopher."
Christopher. God. He wished Ty would just call him Kit. He wished Ty would just understand. Why couldn't he understand that Kit was just trying to protect him?
Fine. He didn't want to be understanding if Ty wasn't. It was just plain unfair. Whatever. It wasn't like he cared anyway. It wasn't like he still pined for Ty every night and cried himself to sleep. It wasn't like every meal felt empty without Ty by his side. If Ty didn't need him, he didn't need Ty either.
He denied everything. Ty wasn't his only friend. He didn't love Ty anymore. Ty was weird. Ty hated interacting with others. He was disgusting and retarded. His passion for Sherlock Holmes was just lame, like him. Tiberius Nero Blackthorn never deserved better and he definitely didn't deserve Kit. He didn't. He didn't. Kit found himself repeating the words inside his head over and over. Perhaps it was to reassure himself.
"We found out that there is another book, which is really powerful and destructive. It's called the Gold Texts of the Living," said Kit in a freezing voice which rivalled Ty's. Then, he began explaining his discovery and what it meant. And how Hale was gone. Carefully, he removed any expression from his voice and face. He didn't want it written all over his face. "That's why we came to discuss it with the others."
"Okay," Ty said. "And how exactly do you plan on finding both Jonathan and Hale?"
"We don't," said Kit. "We only need to find Jonathan before Hale does. We don't intend on finding Barnabas until the tome is in our hands. And even then, it doesn't really matter anymore since he can't cause much trouble. It'll be easy to apprehend him."
"Your words make sense, Christopher. I will ponder over them. In the meantime, I apologise for taking up your time."
"Small matter, Tiberius. If you require more information, you can ask Magnus."
The tension in the air was so high and they were speaking so formally Kit could've sworn everyone was shifting uncomfortably. But it didn't matter anymore. He needed to find Jonathan.
Ty slipped his headphones back on and walked off, leaving Kit to walk haughtily towards the Hall, Clary, Jace, Magnus and Alec behind him. He threw the doors to the Hall wide open, waiting for Alec to say the magic words:
"The Clave is in session!"
Kit watched as guards rung bells, people came hustling in, the Blackthorns settled down.
He stepped through, walked to the front, seated himself. Alec strode in, in full Consul robes—when did he have the time to change? –and looked extremely serious. The others followed, surrounding Kit. He watched as Alec stepped onto the dais and seated himself.
Then, Consul Lightwood explained half the details to everyone present, keeping out certain bits. There were audible gasps and murmurs. But Alec pressed on, finishing the story and motioning for silence. The Hall quietened down.
"I would like the people who defeated Jonathan Wayland to meet me after this. Everyone else, be on the lookout for Hale. There will not be any further Clave meetings after this, unless absolutely necessary in which the heads of the various Institutes will be notified," said Alec. "You will all be returning to your countries via Portal. Dismissed."
People started clearing out, until it was just him and the others. They gathered in a tight circle around Kit while he explained the full story again.
"Questions?" he asked.
Ty raised his hand. Kit nodded coolly.
"How are we going to be able to scour Edom and find Jonathan in time? And how exactly are we going to return?"
"Well, Tiberius, the powder I threw at Jonathan has certain effects. For example, he is trackable by the person who summoned him back to Edom. That's me. Once we get hold of Jonathan, we will be able to obtain the Gold Texts of the Living because Magnus can summon it with an extremely powerful spell. Then, according to Magnus, the book can take us back. Any other questions?"
He received no response.
"Very well. Let's go."
