Alec, Jace, Magnus, Clary, Julian, Emma, Izzy and Simon ran into the cave, Kit still holding the paper like his life depended on it. He was holding the slip of paper so hard it had begun to tear and crumple in his grasp. Startled, Alec said, "Are you on another suicidal funk?"
Jace looked worriedly at Kit. "Oh no, if you commit suicide, there goes the Herondale pride."
Clary smacked him.
"I am not, in fact, on another suicidal funk. I received a fire message with extremely disturbing contents," said Kit matter-of-factly.
"Don't talk like that, it gives me the creeps," muttered Jace, then he frowned. "Fire message? It shouldn't—you shouldn't have been able to receive it. It shouldn't exist here. How is this possible?
Kit shrugged. "My point exactly. Anyway, look at what it says."
He held the message up for them all to see. Their eyes all widened to a significant degree, and Kit decided to add on to it by saying, "Also, guess what? I spoke to the Angel Gabriel and now the Angels all owe me a favour and the sword that guards Eden technically belongs to me. I can summon it any time I like."
He showed them the rune that the message on his arm had left and summoned the sword before returning it. The sword was probably even madder at him now. But Kit didn't really care, because he was enjoying the looks of surprise and awe that everyone else was carrying.
"Now that's the Herondale legacy," said Jace proudly. Clary smacked him again. "What now?"
"We didn't come here for that," said Clary. "We meant to tell you that Ty is missing."
Any enjoyment or happiness that Kit previously had vanished. "Wh—what?" he said, taken aback. "Missing? How could he just go missing—"
"We have reasons to believe that he was taken by my father, Asmodeus, because I could sense his energy in Ty's cave. Every demon, especially the Greater ones, has a peculiar type of energy surrounding them," said Magnus. "This is not good."
"Will he be alright?" said Kit, his face dark with worry.
"We can't be sure," said Julian, and Emma placed her hand on his shoulder. He held her tightly, and Kit suddenly felt at a loss. Julian had Emma, Jace had Clary, Simon had Isabelle and Magnus had Alec. He had nothing. At least, he used to have the presence of Ty, but now even that was taken away from him.
"I'm going to find him," said Kit determinedly. "I don't give a damn about what happens to me. I'm going to find him and make sure he's safe. Period."
"But I care," said Jace, surprising Kit. "We all do."
"It doesn't matter if Ty isn't here," said Kit. "Without him, this whole endeavour is meaningless."
"Ah." Jace nodded. "Then I'll jump recklessly into danger with you."
For third time that day, Clary smacked him.
"Will you please stop smacking me?" snapped Jace. "Whatever did I do to incur your wrath?"
Clary chuckled. "You're cute when you're mad."
Jace's expression softened. He bent down to kiss her cheek, and Kit looked away, feeling jealous. He wished he could share that sort of love with a someone. A particular someone. And this particular someone had been taken by some Greater Demon and Kit needed to save him.
"Magnus, where is Asmodeus? Like, is there a particular place where he is, or does he roam Edom randomly?" asked Kit.
"There might be another cave," said Magnus, "Where he mostly resides. But it is very difficult to locate, and many a few have perished in the journey there, or to even find out where it is."
"Perfect," said Kit. "We'll go there."
"ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?" everyone yelled.
"Magnus literally said it was dangerous as heck," said Alec. "Jace, I think you've met your match."
"Me? Hah! Never," Jace said, but there was a look of disbelief on his face.
"Now, pray tell, Magnus, where do you think his lair is now?"
"Don't speak like that, it gives me the creeps," muttered Jace. Clary raised her hand to smack him again, but he was faster and caught it mid-air, smirking.
"It should be..." Magnus' forehead creased. "The Hill of Edom. Where we landed."
"Great! Let's go," said Kit, and marched straight out of the cave.
But before he did, a wave of protests arose.
"We need a plan," said Simon. "We can't just dive headfirst into the face of danger."
"We're not diving," Kit said airily. "We're marching."
Alec and Simon rolled their eyes. "He's literally a copy of Jace," mumbled Simon.
"Exactly," said Alec. "Jace, you've found yourself the successor to your book club and a minion."
"Why would I want to be his minion?" snorted Kit.
"Will you all just shut up!" yelled Isabelle. "We need a plan, and that's that, or so help me I will turn you all into human pretzels!"
Scary woman, thought Kit.
But plan they did. Working together, all of them quickly assigned roles and the plan was finished quickly. Kit didn't feel particularly confident, but for Ty, to get Ty back, he would do everything, anything even. Perhaps that's what love felt like.
"Let's go," said Kit, drawing himself up from the ground where a dozen markings had been made. "Let's go get Ty back."
As they left the room, the fire message, lying forgotten on the floor, began to glow softly. Moments later, a shadow thudded across the room. When the room was empty, the message was gone.
