Heiji and Kazuha smoke on the cold roof.

Heiji x Kazuha

He hated it.

Yet he ignored the burning sensation in his chest while trying to get another drag with his quivering hand.

Heiji sat on the cold roof from his house, wearing a winter jacket to get at least some warmth and his usual cap. He stared at the streets and trees being covered in thick white and the smoke mixing itself with the air. The street and house lights were on, the stars are sparkling and it would've been a magical night, if it weren't for the low temperature.

He knew he shouldn't do such thing. Especially since we was practising kendo and needed good stamina as a detective. So why was Heiji sitting on a snow-filled roof and smoking a cigarette?

He couldn't think of an answer.

"Yo." Someone suddenly called. Heiji almost let out a loud shriek, but managed to calm himself down. With an annoyed huff, he turned around to see Kazuha approaching him.

His eyes widened and he tried to throw the cigarette away, but it was already too late.

Great. What should she now think of him?

"Woah. Never thought you would smoke. But to each its own I guess."

Heiji just closed his eyes and hugged himself tightly when a cold breeze hit him. He couldn't feel his left hand anymore, so he put it back into his pocket.

He only gave a quick peck on Kazuha's cheek and tried to avoid her stern glare. How unfortunate that she was the one, who caught him smoking

"I usually don't do it", he replied. "It's just... gah, I can't even explain my problem!"

Heiji resisted the urge to let out a huge groan and stared at his shoes. She probably wouldn't understand it anyway.

"Then don't bother", was her only response.

Heiji decided to change the subject. "What are you doing here then?"

"Dunno. It was like something wanted to drag me outside to find you . Anyway. Can you give me one of those cancer sticks?"

He narrowed his eyebrows. "Pardon. What?"

Out of all things she could do, she's asking him for a cigarette? Maybe she had to deal with some bullshit too.

"I know this shit is dangerous but I also wanted to try it at least once in my life. Like to see what's so great about smokin. I mean Ran's father is a heavy smoker too and I remember him saying once how smoking would calm his nerves?"

"I don't think you should take him as an example. And only for the first few times, before you get addicted to nicotine."

"Who said I'm going to become a heavy smoker? Just let my try one!"

"Whatever." Heiji sighed and grabbed the package he bought at some small store a while ago and gave Kazuha one, before putting himself another one in his mouth.

"But be careful", he warned. "If you aren't cautious, you're going to get the stuff in your lungs. And it fucking hurts."

"Isn't that obvious though?"

Heiji sighed. "Apparently not for me." He quickly lit the second cigarette and was directly met with thick air and an unpleasant feeling. When he watched Kazuha trying to lit her own cigarette, he forgot about it and almost laughed at the dumb expression she made.

Kazuha coughed softly. "Well, it certainly burns and doesn't really taste well. But now I can say that I've smoked once. Anyway Heiji, why were you smoking in the first place?"

He knew she wouldn't let it go.

"Don't know. But everything's just a huge mess right now."

"Doesn't justify anything'."

"I know", he retorted annoyed. "What if I had the same motivation as you? Maybe I was curious as well?"

"I would believe you, if it weren't for the odd behaviour you had in the past few days. And if I'm allowed to assume, it probably has to do with your family."

Heiji took another drag before answering: "It's frustrating, you know? You'd think that parents normally support you in whatever you do. Sure, they also worry and so, but how can someone be completely against it?"

"What do you expect? You always get shot or stabbed by these murderers. It's a miracle they haven't tried to prevent you sooner."

"And why are you telling me this now? Does that mean you don't approve my detective work either?"

"No. But I can see why your parents aren't thrilled about you stepping into danger too much for their liking. But not letting their son doing whatever he loves isn't a good consequence either."

"It's not only that", Heiji sighed and dropped the cigarette next to him. "Whenever the media talks about Kudou, they always refer to him as the Great Detective of the East. But I feel like everyone only knows me because I'm Hattori Heizou's son? I don't do it for fame or anythin', it just feels pretty much degrading in my opinion."

Kazuha also let the cigarette be and intertwined her hands with Heiji's. He slowly looked up and started at her lovely eyes again.

"I don't know if this sounds biased. But for me, you're my favourite detective. You will stand out by your own. And these stupid people will realise that you're not the western Kudou-kun, the son of a famous police chief or somethin'."

Heiji slowly closed his eyes. "I suppose you're right, but it's heavenly annoying."

"Listen, Heiji, I know standing in someone else's shadow is sickening. I can relate because I had a hard time not getting compared to the stupid Momiji!"

Heiji raised his eyebrows bemusedly. "I'm pretty sure that's only in your head, Kazuha."

"Whatever. I just think that my boyfriend is an awesome detective who should not be bothered by stupid people who think they know better. And I don't want him to consume dangerous stuff. So next time you're feeling down, just come to me and we talk about it, okay?"

"I promise."

"Good. And now you owe me something because I'm freezing."

Heiji grinned while learning towards her. "I know a good solution", he said, before closing the distance.

I love Heizuha and they deserve better treatment. Can't they just finally confess or something.
