Heiji wouldn't let anyone find out why he dislikes embracing other people, Ran gets to know it by accident.

Warnings: grammar mistakes, cussing, light angst

This is based on the Manga/Anime Fruits Basket, watch it! Quickly became one of my favourites!

And I haven't read the manga yet, only watched the anime episodes, so I don't know the end of Fruits Basket lol. [Dec. 2019]

(Update: well, I have actually finished all the Manga volumes, and it was absolutely awesome. Please check it out! [Feb. 2020])

Also, let us pretend that Heiji and Hakuba are distant cousins.

When Ran met Heiji Hattori the first time in the school hall during her second year of high school, she could've sworn that he had this light aura around him, like he was supposed to stand out in front of everyone.

And it worked.

Everyone treated him like he was some sort of prince. Girls were fawning over him, up to the point where it simply gets embarrassing watching them trying to talk to him, let alone to get his attention in any way possible. Guys were either envious because Hattori received this huge amount of attention, yet also pity him because of the same reason. Because he barely seemed to have private time for himself.

And of course, when there is one popular person, the rumours were nearby. Some of them were utterly ridiculous and Ran wondered whether they were true or just made up by foul mouths. The latter possibility did not seem to be far-fetched though, since many people who are either not acquainted with Hattori at all or are disliking him, are relishing themselves by spreading rumours.

One popular theory is that he might be gay because he seemed to reject every girl trying to approach him, not even let them hug! The latter was understandable, for Ran at least. She wouldn't enjoy random people whom she had nothing to do with trying to get close to her.

But not everyone shared that thought with her. One time, when one girl tried to hug him from behind as a possible surprise, Hattori had startled and threw her onto the ground as a response, leading her to have a broken hand.

The news quickly spread around the whole school, creating more assumptions to work with. But since Hattori didn't confirm nor deny any theory about himself, the other students decided to grab their nose deeper into his stuff. Also, it probably did not help that he was a rather impulsive and brash person yet Ran still thought his way of dealing with their fellow students was neat.

Once, Ran had asked Shinichi, who's also Hattoris best friend, what the deal about him his, but her boyfriend didn't seem to want to share any secrets about him. Since she was sure that there must be something going on that made this guy behave like that, she had hoped that Shinichi would share one detail or two. The lack of it made her slightly furious.

Whenever Ran tried to make him change his mind like promising him that she wouldn't even dare to share it to a third party, it didn't work on him. Shinichi would always shake his head, change the topic or cut her off with a simple "No."

Apparently the only good thing to get out of it was that he wouldn't betray his best friend, so Ran had to gave Shinichi the credit where it's due.

On one morning, Ran decided to walk around the forest before heading to school to cool off her mind.

It had been some tough weeks for her, school is not going well, she kept fighting with Shinichi about stupid topics and on top of that — she had to cope with the loss of her parents.
