"I'm sorry Shinichi, but I have to cancel our date. I don't feel myself in a good shape today and want to avoid some unnecessary and embarrassing scenes by showing up."
That was one of the very few times Ran had called to decline one of her and Shinichis dates. Usually, it was the other way around. With Shinichi being a detective and his unhealthy amount of stumbling into cases wherever he went, it was nearly impossible to get some good quality time outside their homes.
"What so you mean by avoiding unnecessary and embarrassing scenes? What happened that you would think something like this would happen during our date?"
"It's nothing extreme, really. I just don't feel good, almost like I'm going to throw up any minute. So can we postpone our date until I'm okay again?", Ran pleaded again.
"Oh, I understand. I'm quite disappointed, but I understand", Shinichi sighed back and immediately, Ran's tone became snarky.
"Don't give me that! How often did you have to postpone our dates because you wanted to solve a case?", Ran huffed. "So you can just deal with the other way around just once!"
Shinichi almost laughed at the sudden outburst, because she wasn't wrong at all and he almost got the desire to tease her a bit, but eventually let it be. What Ran needed more was some good rest.
"Yeah, I understand, plus, it was just a tiny joke. Just get well soon and I'll see you in a few days, I guess?", he said then.
"I'm trying my best. Thank you for understanding, Shinichi. I love you!"
"I love you too."
They ended their call with that. Shinichi let his phone drop onto his bed, threw himself on it flat on his stomach and let out a loud sigh.
He was so excited to go out with Ran, a long time had passed since their last date, but he couldn't be foolish, her health was obviously more important. He's obviously going to wait until she's fine again.
But what could he do now? Since he gained some spare time and hadn't planned anything else.
Shinichi tried to distract himself, with doing some homework he had wanted to complete in the evening. When the school work was done, he tried to read one of his favourite novel, but concentrating wasn't easy this time.
It was a blissful silence, the perfect opportunity to complete his novel for the umpteenth time. He could even order something to eat or just a little snack, as long as the atmosphere kept being calm and relaxing.
... But the thought of his girlfriend feeling sick didn't leave his mind. She hasn't explicitly said what she had, but Shinichi can't imagine that it was nothing serious, giving the fact that their dates are rare.
And soon, he stared to get some drastic scenarios. What if she has caught food poisoning or some bacteria infection, what if her father wasn't home right now and the intention would escalate into a sepsis?
Shinichi knew he was being ridiculous, Ran would never hide a serious illness from him, especially if it was a death-threatening one. Maybe it was just a flu. Yeah, that could be it.
So the detective put his book into the shelf again, got up from his comfortable chair and went to the entrance hall, to put his shoes on. Shinichi got the idea to head over the detective agency her father owned and give himself a better picture. He need to make sure that Ran was still alright while being ill.
