A red thread of string on your pinky finger that connects you to your soulmate. The thread cannot be broken, but it will stretch and tangle.
Ran x Shinichi

Ran and Shinichi don't meet each other until they are teenagers, just for the sake of this plot.

When Shinichi was a child and noticed the thin red string for a first time, he thought someone from kindergarten might have played a little prank on him while he was sleeping. Realising he couldn't take it off made him panic a little. Especially when he even used scissors or his teeth. The string didn't dare to loosen.
After he grumpily admitted defeat and went over to his mother to let her take care of it, she stared confusedly at him.
"Shin-chan, I don't see anything looking like a string on your fingers!"
"What? But it's right there, on my pinky finger!"
His mother's eyes lit up and she started to giggle. Shinichi stared at her in confusion.
"Don't tell me that you don't know what it means, Shin-chan! Didn't the kindergarten teachers talk to you about that sort of stuff?", she chirped.
Shinichi shook his head, still irritated. "Otherwise I wouldn't be this clueless. So, what's the big deal about the string."
He hated being clueless about something so he stared with an impatient huff at his mother.
Yukiko smiled fondly while she motioned Shinichi to sit next to her. "You see, we're living in a soulmate system, where every human is destined to another. And to find the person, they get some sort of mark on them. You have the red string of fate that connects you to your soulmate. But you can't break or destroy it, as you may have noticed. And other people like me can't see the string, except for your soulmate."
Small Shinichi tilted his head in confusion. "But that's dumb. What if I don't like the person I'm destined with? And am I not allowed to fall in love with another person?"
"Well, if that is the case, you usually get some different kind of mark or an indication that you'll share a platonic relationship with your soulmate. If this happens, people can fall in love with whoever they want. That's why so many prefer that one."
"Who can blame them", Shinichi grumbled. "But apparently, I don't belong to these lucky ones?"
"I'm afraid, but no, Shin-chan."
°°°
As the years went on, Shinichi stared to dislike the red string of fate. The fact, that he had to love that person who shares the same red string, stinks. What would happen if that wasn't the case? Will both of them die?
But he didn't have time to think about it anyway. As a detective and a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, his free time was already consumed with crime and such.
That was, until he entered Teitan High School.
Shinichi had noticed that his string became more tighter and tougher while going to his new highschool.
He could already hear the loud voice of Sonoko in the hallway. Out of all of the people, he got stuck with her. They've known each other since kindergarten and have been friends since then. Even though he would never tell her that, he sometimes cherished her presence.
With huge curiousity he entered the class room and approached his childhood friend. She sat on someone's deck, laughing loud about something. Shinichi was already annoyed after a few seconds.
