"Okay", Masumi grinned in mischief, their pointy finger was placed on their upper lip and they made a thoughtful face. "I dare you to text your number neighbour."
"My what?", Ran asked in confusion.
Masumi's grin widened. Sonoko, who was listening to every single word, started to laugh. "Oh, I like this, this should be interesting! Ran, you need to do this!"
"When the two of you are liking the same thing, there's surely nothing to worry about", Ran grumbled, hoping that her friends would get the obvious sarcastic undertone. "But okay, I'm taking the dare. So, what's a number neighbour?"
The three of them were sitting on the ground of Sonoko's big room and having one of their monthly slumber parties. Besides gossiping, doing each other nails and whatever you do during a sleepover, they also played several games.
This time, Sonoko had suggested Truth or Dare and after what happened at the latest sleepover, with them becoming ridiculously drunk and Ran sending Shinichi some rather explicit messages even though she was absolutely not into him, everyone had immediately agreed to do so.
So far, they had asked ech other harmless question and the dares were not humiliating. And how, Ran's turn was to text someone. Oh god, she really hoped it was nothing sexual, just the thought of hit makes her cringe. She really could not forget the last time she had send those risky texts and she was glad for Shinichi just laughing it off.
Masumi grabbed a piece of dark chocolate and munched thoughtfully, before they finally started to explain: "It's actually pretty harmless, Ran. You text someone with the same number, but the last digit is either up or down from yours. You could get some interesting reactions of that, whether they're friendly or not."
Yeah, that's something she could get behind. Ran sighed in relief and felt herself loosen up a bit after hearing the easy task. "Okay, and what should I text them?"
"Just go by 'Hello number neighbour' or something like that", Masumi suggested.
Ran nodded and grabbed her phone, searched firstly for her own number since she hasn't memorised it, before finally tapping the digits on the keypads.
This shuld be interesting, she thought, as she was typing out the message.
[23:05] Ran: Hello number neighbour!
"So, while we're waiting to them to reply at all, how about we go on with our game, she said, not wanting the whole number neighbour thing be the centre of attention right now. Luckily for her, Sonoko and Masumi agreed, and the game continued.
Around midnight, Masumi fell asleep on the futon while Sonoko's body was spread across her bed, very feint snores leaving her mouth. Ran snorted at the view when she came back from the toilet, but since she was the only one awake right now and felt herself becoming tired as well, she decided to also call it a day.
