Ariana released an old track that she made with her friend Victoria Monét titled Monopoly. The song wasn't serious, and the music video was meme-worthy, full of emojis, and trendy edits. The music video was low budget and filmed backstage at an arena due to her being on the road for tour. The lyrics, "I like women and men," sung by both Monét and Grande, started controversy as fans speculated and made assumptions about her sexuality. Others said she was using the lyrics for relevance, or even lying for the attention.
She only addressed the backlash once on twitter while she replied to a fan: 'i haven't before and still don't feel the need to now. which is okay' The true is that she didn't need to label herself and people were only upset because she's Ariana Grande. Other celebrities, both male and female, refused to label themselves and they were praised for it... yet, for Ariana, she was ridiculed.
