I wake up and my head is pounding, and it doesn't help that it's storming outside. I need to get ready for school or else I will never hear the end of it from my mother. I look at myself in the mirror and decide to throw my hair in a loose braid and put on some makeup for once. I head downstairs and see my mom is home for once.
"Hi honey, remember you're working double shifts at the diner tonight, so you're gonna have to walk home."
"Really. It's going to be storming all day and night. So, I'm just supposed to walk home and be drenched?!"
"Well kids, I have to go to work. Have fun and stay out of trouble. Sean, remember to look good for those college recruiters tonight! Love you!"
"And there she goes and gets herself out of every conversation with me. Sean, why can't you drive me home?"
"Like mom just said, I need to stay and look good for colleges. So I can get a scholarship."
"Mhm, yeah okay."
"Cmon get in the car, we're gonna be late."
"Since when did you care about school?"
It seems like my brother and mother share the same skill, getting out of conversations they don't want to have. We make it to school, and I need to run in between rain drops to try and stay semi-dry. I meet up with Jenna in the hallway right before class and she complements me on my new look. I then head to English with all of my favorite people. I walk into class and see that we are doing a project on a Tale of Two Cities, I look at the list and see that my partner is Jessica. Great, just great.
The day goes on, and on, and then it's time for me to go to work. I head into the diner and I am greeted by Kate, my boss, she's like a second mother to me.
"Hey hon, have you found any colleges yet that you want to attend?"
"No, not yet, it seems like I might not even go. I don't have the money."
"Don't worry, if you need some help just ask."
I serve my regulars and the time flies by. I'm guessing that the baseball game ended considering that Nick, Jessica, who is wearing Nick's jersey, her crew, and Sean are sitting at one of my tables. So much for "looking good for colleges". I walk up to them, take their orders and Jessica looks up at me and smirks.
"Oh look who it is. It's diner girl! I hope you don't mess up our order or our project."
Nick nudges her.
"Jess, give her a break."
I shake my head no.
"No, it's fine. I'll get right on it."
I head to the kitchen and give the chefs their orders and wait for them to be completed. I head back to their table and give them their milkshakes. As I turn to leave I hear something spill, I turn around and see Jessica's milk shake all over the table.
"It wasn't thick enough and there wasn't enough chocolate in it."
This girl will literally be the death of me.
"I'm sorry about that. I will clean this up and get you another one."
And I will be sure to spit in it too.
After the brat and the rest leave, it's still raining and it's time for me to start my walk home. I punch out and head outside. I'm not even a third of the way home and I'm already drenched. Why does my Friday need to be this terrible? While I'm wishing to be anywhere else, a car pulls up and the window rolls down, it's Nick.
"Hop in."
"Why would I do that?"
"Cause you have a long walk home, it's raining and you're drenched and cold."
I sigh in defeat and accept his offer. The car ride home is silent and kind of awkward. We arrive at my house, and I couldn't be more grateful.
"Thanks for the ride, you can go now, Sean's probably home I'll be fine."
"Yeah there's no way I'm leaving you home alone when you're wet and freezing. I know for a fact Sean's not home, after the diner he said he was gonna go to some party. So, I'm staying."
Well, crap. What am I supposed to do now?
