Today is the day where a month from now I will be competing hopefully catching the eyes of some college scouts. I feel amazing, well besides my stomach, but today I feel is going to be a good day.
"Bella! Wait up!"
I turn around and see Nick waving and running towards me.
"Hey Nick."
Yikes. We haven't even said ten words to each other and it's already awkward.
"Wanna walk to class together?"
"Sure, why not."
Ever since the night he found me, he didn't ask questions, but things were still weird. He thought that I was extremely clumsy, I am, but not that clumsy. I only hope he never asks, so I don't have to answer.
We walk into class together, which catches everyone's attention, I hear all the whispers as I'm heading to my seat.
"Why is he with HER?"
"Isn't Nick with Jessica?"
Ugh, sometimes people just really annoy me.
The looks Jessica keeps giving me could kill. Not only does it seem like I'm replacing her on the team, but I'm also "stealing" her boyfriend.
At lunch Brittany tells us that practice is going to be later since the gymnasium needs to be cleaned, so I might be able to go home and grab a couple more things.
Sean hasn't told anyone besides his main guys about watching over me, well besides Nick. James is always trying to take my mind off of it, which is nice.
"Hey Bells, whatcha doin' tonight? Me and the guys, and of course Brittany, were gonna stop by the diner and grab some shakes? Wanna come with?"
"Well, I have practice later. So maybe I can hit up Brittany for a ride."
"Alright, so do we. See ya then!"
"See ya James."
I wonder is Sean will be able to take me home then?
The last bell rings, so I grab my books and my phone rings. No Caller ID. Huh? My dumbass picks up anyways.
"Hello?"
"Is this Bella?"
"Yes. Who's asking?"
"It's your father?"
"What?!"
"Listen, I'm sorry it's been so long..."
"Prove it"
"Prove what?"
"That you're my dad."
"Okay. Ask me anything?"
"What did only you and I used to do?"
"We would go outside at night and look up at the stars and try and make animals with them."
"It really is you?"
"Yeah it's me Bella. It's really me."
I walk out the doors, wiping tears from my eyes. Sean's leaning against his car texting and looks up confused as to why I'm crying.
"Bella, what happened? Is everything okay?"
"Sean, dad called me."
After that, we both went silent and the drive home was the same. I walked in the door and saw mom and Daryl talking. God, I can't even look at him.
"Hi mom. You're home early."
"Yeah, how was school?"
"Dad, called me."
"Bullshit."
"No, he did."
"Stop lying to me. Go up to your room and don't bother coming down if you're gonna keep pulling this shit. You supposedly make the gymnastics team and now your father calls? What's next aliens exist? Go. I can't even with you right now."
I storm up to my room and slam my door shut. I start to pack some other clothes and things I'll need at Jenna's, since I'm going to be there most of the time. My door opens and I can feel the breeze shift in the room. I turn around and am faced with an angry Daryl.
"Listen up, since you didn't listen the first time..."
I look away from his menacing eyes and he forcefully grabs my jaw to make me look at him. He's about to continue his tormenting speech when Sean walks in. Right on cue brother.
"Hey sis, we should get going soon."
I walk passed Sean and head to the car and hear distinct shouting coming from my room. It's nice to know my brother cares for me as much as he does.
I head to the locker room and change into my leo. I'm working on my floor routine while Jenna and Brittany are talking with coach. I'm about to land my back hand spring when all of a sudden the mat moves.
CRACK!
OH MY GOD. MY LEG!
Jenna, Brittany and Coach run over. Jenna goes to call Sean, Coach calls an ambulance, and Brittany is looking for the culprit who moved the mat in the first place. Her eyes lock with Jenna's and Brittany starts screaming at her.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!"
While all this commotion is going on, I am currently balling my eyes out, laying on the ground with a broken ankle.
Coach gets off the phone with the paramedics and has Brittany come stay with me, or else she might just lose it.
We arrive at the hospital and it turns out I broke my ankle.
"What will I do about the competition?"
"You should be out of the cast in about three weeks. After that you may be in a boot and maybe some physical therapy."
Before I lunge at the doctor because of his lack of feeling about my situation, Sean steps in.
"Thanks doc."
I can hear a conversation going on just outside of my curtain. It seems to be Coach and Brittany.
"Coach. I am positively sure that Jessica moved that mat so Bella would get injured and she would take her place at the comp."
"Brittany, there is no way to prove that. If Bella doesn't recover and gain her strength back in time, Jessica will take her slot."
I have to speak up. If I don't, I might not be going to college.
"Coach. I can do it. Just give me time."
They open up the curtain.
"Bella. I'll give you the shot. But don't push it."
"I won't"
