Her Children

It's time for the party and same old Jenna hauls me to her house before to redo my makeup and my hair to go along with the dress. Sean's tie is matching her dress and Matthew's is matching Brittany's. It's strange not matching anyone, what's even more strange is that I haven't heard anything about Sean's scholarships.

Jenna and I arrive casually late and everyone's eyes are on me, what are they looking at?

"They're looking at you."

Next to me stands Nick, and his tie is matching my dress. I thought we weren't a thing, I thought that kiss was a one and done as was the Winter Formal. I catch my mom's glare, she must think that I paid him to be my date to the party, even though this is his party too. Daryl is already a little tipsy but my mom is keeping him on a tight leash, for now.

The sun is setting and people are starting to make speeches about how their children grew up so fast, and their successes. My mom would probably talk about her amazing son and all of the colleges just begging him to even spare them a glance. I mean he is the captain of the baseball team that went to Nationals this year, can't forget about that.

Jenna gets up on stage wiping the tears from her eyes, thank god for waterproof mascara.

"I can't tell you guys how much I love you all. When Sean and I first started dating I was a little worried about how Bella would feel about her best friend dating her brother, but she fully accepted it. Bella wanted us to be happy and I think it's time we pay her back."

Pay me back? How? What?

Holy Shit. Nick is getting on stage.

"Listen Bella, when we kissed it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I always had a crush on you, which is why I was always at Sean's, so I could see you. At Winter Formal, you looked absolutely gorgeous and I was too nervous to actually do this so I told you your dress was pretty. But now, with some help, I grew a pair. Bella, will you be my girlfriend?"

Oh My God.

"Nick... I would love to be your girlfriend."

Everyone bursts into cheers and Nick runs off the stage and wraps me in his arms and kisses me like our lives depended on it. I was so wrapped up in Nick that I didn't notice my mother going up on stage.

"Oh COME ON PEOPLE! Do you really believe that? I mean she probably paid him to come up here and do this, the same way she paid her colleges to give her scholarships and the same way she got on the gymnastics team. Bella didn't really do any of that, I mean why do you think she worked so much? And wasn't Nick just dating Jessica? Bella isn't capable of doing anything, and she never will be. Why are we so focused on Bella, when we can look at my amazing son, Sean, and all of his scholarships."

The tears in my eyes are fogging up my vision and I feel Nick's arms tighten around me. Why would she do this? I never did anything to her.

"Really?!"

I look up, Sean is standing up and he looks pissed.

"You're gonna do that to your own daughter. You're barely even home and you always put her down. She's worked so hard to get where she is now and what have you done. NOTHING. I'll have you know that I turned down all those opportunities and I am staying home and studying business, here, in Florida."

OH MY GOD, the look on my mother's face right now.

"HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!"

Sean isn't done yet though.

"Did you even notice that your daughter practically moved out the same week Daryl  came to live with us. I bet you don't even know why, or care for that matter. Daryl beat Bella, she had to go to the hospital. She has a giant scar on her stomach because of that monster. She went to school with a black eye the next day. Did you know that Jessica broke your daughter's ankle and was still able to get a ten on her routine. Of course not."

My mom hasn't really been there for any of my life, it seems like I've been living by myself with my friends along for the ride.

My mom looks at Daryl and he gets up and runs.

Nick whispers into my ear, "Don't worry, we already called the cops" as Daryl falls into the pool. The night goes on and my mother heads home, ashamed. She was completely embarassed in front of everyone by her very own children.
