Kora's POV
My life, my rules.
Those were the words Papa told me I'd say to him and Mama as a toddler whenever they tried to boss me around. If Mama ever told me I should eat more vegetables, or Papa told me to go outside, or behave in class more, I'd recite those words to them matter-of-factly as one of them either laughed or shook their head at me.
Apparently I was quite the troublemaker as a little four-year-old, and I suppose that much hasn't changed – except the fact that Papa did not hesitate to deeply describe what a spoiled brat I was. I suppose I must've gotten better after a while, but I always chuckle to myself when I think about a tiny me screaming at the top of her lungs and throwing a tantrum.
I can imagine it now – my dark hair braided into two plaits at the sides, my bright eyes big and full of despair, a banshee wail escaping my lips whilst jumping up and down wretchedly. I imagine Mama telling me off repeatedly and Papa sighing, shaking his head at me as he sat down.
We never actually had proper food everyday, Papa had to go out to the munitions factory to earn food and money. Luxuries like regular meals, comfortable beds and big houses belong to the magiks countries, places that had been taken over by the Magiks Council thousands of years ago.
The rest of the world, the few countries left who still have human rights, freedom and majority non-magiks population, are tasked with creating the items that magiks creatures use on a daily basis.
Non-magiks countries are riddled with factories, and miserable people working in them. Magiks countries are abundant in discrimination against the unfortunate humans that inhabit it.
It's like no matter where you look, non-magiks will always be underneath. No matter what anybody can do, us humans can never win.
And that's when all those years worth of history lessons learning practically the same thing come back to me.
We, the Magiks Council, will have complete control over Earth. We will govern it, cherish it, and appoint rulers of magiks blood to rule over your nations. In exchange, we decree that humans are beneath us. We could cast them down with our spells, we could tear them apart with our fangs, we could scare them senseless with our wits. But we're not going to. In exchange for our kindness, and our protection, these humans will know their place. Below us, the powerful magiks creatures!
"Kora?" a voice pipes up. I look up to see Synn, standing over me with a concerned look on his face. I wonder if he ever feels ashamed of how privileged he really is, whilst millions of others are starving and being worked to death in lethal conditions.
I wonder if he even knows how lucky he is. How fortunate he is to be able to wake up and eat breakfast everyday. How fortunate he is to be able to buy whatever he likes, whenever he likes. How fortunate he is to not be judged for being himself. For being what he is, what he was born as, and what he always will be.
How can someone not resent that, even if it's the slightest bit? I mean, just look at the differences; I'm the dragon bride, potentially one of the most powerful women in the country. Yet I'm beyond being respected, hardly acknowledged as a noble, and not been given any sort of official title or land or money.
Then there's Synn. Synn, who's a dragon, a magiks creature. Synn, who's got the world at his feet. Synn, who's not only a dragon, but a man, and a royal one at that. Respected, loved, and appreciated.
"Mm?" I mumble, sleepily rubbing my eyes. I slept beside Azura yesterday, in her chamber. After learning of her condition, we'd both been moved next to each other and she was let free of the dungeon.
