Chapter 16

With those very motivating and pressure-taking words the team got on the car and anxiously drove towards the meeting-place.

After Xiao Yun collapsed, Zhan Yao quickly searched through his belongings. Anything that could help him escape. He knew he didn't have much time before David's men would arrive so he had to be quick.

Now a cellphone, a set of keys and a water bottle in his hands he threw the camera a last provocative smile and finally left the room.

Once he was outside he tried to orientate himself. But he failed. There were no clues as to which was the right direction. So he just blindly followed his instincts and ran for it until he found a door which looked a little different from the rest.

Maintenance room.

Perfect!

To his luck the door was not locked and he quickly slid in the room with a last glance to make sure nobody saw him.

The sound of his unsteady breathing was filling the small room as he hid in a corner behind some boxes.

The first part of his escape had been easier than expected. Hopefully, the second - and much more difficult - part would go just as well.

But Zhan Yao was aware he wasn't safe just yet. His hide-out was really obvious and it was only a matter of time until those gangsters found him.

He quickly took out Xiao Yun's belongings and looked through them while gulping down the water greedily.

Even though they might be useful later on, he wouldn't need the keys at the moment. He was about to put them back in his pocket again when the keychain suddenly caught his attention. Because it wasn't a keychain. It was a flashdrive!

When he finally finished the water he dialled Bai Yutong's number.

It ringed...

"Yes, Bai Yutong speaking."

Even over the phone, Bai Yutong's deep voice was capable to send shivers down his spine. And the hard tone was completely unfamiliar to Zhan Yao who was used to the soft way Bai Yutong allways called him.

"Yutong..."

He breathed out and it was so quiet that he was afraid the mouse didn't hear him and was already about to say it again but he was interrupted by Bai Yutng's voice which flew through the speaker inside his ear and then into his heart - makig him feel warm all over.

"Cat..."

Then a muffled command to Jiang Ling to track the location of the call was heard before he finally turned to talk to Zhan Yao again.

"Did they hurt you?"

His voice sounded pressed and Zhan Yao didn't need to see him to know that his mouse was clenching his teeth and his body was stiff all over - trying to retain his composure.

"They didn't. I'm fine, don't wor-"

As if to betray him, his coughing cut of his sentence midway and he cursed silently.

"You're fine, I see. Where are you right now? Who kidnapped you?"

"I really am fine, Bai Yutong. There was just a little bit of dust. I don't know where exactly I am. A basement. I hid in the maintenance room for now but I'll probably be found soon. The one who kidnapped me was someone named Xiao Yun, an underling of David, the mob boss of a criminal organization called 'RedFangs'. They said they already called Zhao Jue to demand his exchange for me. Is he with you?"

He quickly tried to soothe the angry Bai Yutong and distract him with as much information he had at hand. After all, he didn't know how long he would be able to hide for before either Bai Yutong or David's men found him. Preferably the first option. Until then, he would give him any information possible - no matter how meaningless it seemed on the surface.

"Yeah, he is. We're on our way to the meet-up place right now. Wait a second... Alright, Jiang Ling found your location. We'll be there soon. It will take us about 8 minutes if we speed so just hold on until I'm there, okay?"

Zhan Yao smiled.

"Yeah. I'm waiting for you so don't do anything stupid all right?"

"That's my line! You're the one who always gets himself in trouble! I swear it's so much work to be with you."

Even though he said words like that Zhan Yao knew he didn't mean it and a small laugh escaped his lips.

"I know, I know. But you love me anyways."

The rare boldness left Bai Yutong dumbfounded. He didn't even have the chance to retort when Zhan Yao already continued.

"Hurry up already, I miss you."

At that moment,  the SCI team got the extremely rare chance to witness a completely speechless and red-faced captain for the very first time.

"Y-You-you... Just you wait until we're home. You're so gonna get it!"

He finally managed to blurt out less intelligently and Zhan Yao had to hold back his laughter. It was rare for Bai Yutong to be flustered like this and it was extremly regrettable he couldn't even see his face right now.

Simultaneously, the meaning behind his words sent another set of hot shivers through his whole body.

Since it was a rare chance he decided to tease him just a little more.

"Yeah, I can't wait. We haven't been able to have some time for us for a long while. Should we take a holiday once the case is over? We can spend the whole day together. Laze around, eat, take a bath or..."

Bai Yutong caughed and was beet-red by now. He couldn't help but imagine and when he did, he could notice the rapid change in his body.

"HEY!"

The sudden scream startled the team on the car with him but only made Zhan Yao smirk. This was actually fun.

"Zhan Yao, I swear if I'm done with you, you will need the damn holiday because you won't be able to walk for weeks!"

He silently threatened in a deep and low voice dripping in suppressed desires. The tone made Zhan Yao's mind hazy and he was about to say something to provoke him even more but their sweet moment was interrupted when the door was suddenly pulled open.

His whole body tensed up and he squeezed himself even more into the corner, making himself much smaller.

Bai Yutong must have heard over the phone because he stayed quiet and Zhan Yao risked a peek at the screen. About six minutes into the call. Which meant Bai Yutong would only arrive in two more minutes and - depending on the situation and the building he was in - it might take him another 30 minutes or even more to find him.

Zhan Yao held his breath and waited.
