Chapter 31

Bai Yutong cupped Zhan Yao's face with his hand - his caress gentle yet firm - and Zhan Yao closed his eyes when he felt his soft lips against his own. All anger seemed forgotten with his touch.

"I'm reaching my limit."

Bai Yutong rasped when he pulled back from the short kiss.

For a short moment, Zhan Yao didn't know what to say or do. He just stood silently with a blank look on his face - Bai Yutong staring back at him with the same blank look. Then, finally, Zhan Yao just stretched out his arms towards him and pulled Bai Yutong into a comforting hug. Happy with the close proximity, Bai Yutong immediately wrapped his arms around Zhan Yao's slim body and squeezed him tightly. With a content sigh, he nuzzled his nose in the crook of Zhan Yao's neck and took in a deep breath of his scent. Zhan Yao smelled like books, milk and warmth and the body wash he gave him as a present which he secretly used as well.

"I know", Zhan Yao whispered in his ear and Bai Yutong's skin prickled from the soft breath on his ear and the velvety voice.

"But we're at work. Once this is all over, we can have some leisure time all for ourselves", Zhan Yao reminded.

Bai Yutong knew he was right. They had to focus on what is in front of them right now and get this case closed as quickly as possible. Then they would be able to finally get their much-deserved and long-yearned for vacation. But Bai Yutong knew better than to be hopeful like that. After all, he has been promised vacation so many times before already and in the end, a case popped up and he was forced to renounce from his vacation. This time he was not ready to do the same. Both of them deserved this vacation more than anyone else. They had worked so hard for months, Zhan Yao even went to prison undercover because of it. At the memory of his cat in that awful cell, Bai Yutong's grip tightened protectively and he somehow tried to suppress his anger.

They still had not talked about it yet. Bai Yutong sighed. He didn't want to bring it up and until now, neither of them had the chance to either - the timing had always been off with how busy they were with the case and all - but now that the case was almost finished and the both of them were to go on vacation soon, it was just a matter of time until the topic resurfaced. And they had to talk about it - there was no way around it.

The two of them continued to remain silent, hugging each other in the middle of the room while Bai Yutong tried to calm his inner conflicts. Ultimately, he got too lazy to hug while standing so he shifted them towards the couch, lied down and pulled Zhan Yao on top of him. It didn't take long before Zhan Yao's calming effect on him took over and he was pulled to sleep.

A steady knocking pulled Zhan Yao out of his thoughts and he momentarily panicked when he heard the handle being pushed down but the tension evaporated when he remembered Bai Yutong had locked the door earlier.

"Bai Sir? Zhan Sir?", a mildly worried voice asked from outside the office.

"One moment, Ma Han. We'll be right out", Zhan Yao called back and shortly after heard Ma Han's footsteps move away from the door.

"Bai Yutong. Bai Yutong wake up", he tried to get up but Bai Yutong's grip around his waist was too strong. He struggled for a moment longer while calling out to him but Bai Yutong remained unmoving like a rock.

"Xiao Tong-ah."

Bai Yutong's eyes immediately snapped open and Zhan Yao was so surprised he could not help but burst out laughing. The confused face he got from Bai Yutong in response only made him laugh even harder.
