A/N - warning for mentions and descriptions of emotional abuse

"You're not wearing that are you?" Minerva says with distaste, scowling at Violet's button-up shirt and skinny jeans as she puts in two studded earrings in each lobe. Violet looks down at her outfit, Louis said to dress casual. It was a quiet dinner, not an evening at a 5-star restaurant. Violet swallows past the lump in her throat, tugging on the cuffs of her shirt as she reluctantly meets Minerva's stern stare.

"Sorry, I'll go change into something else," Violet says in a small voice, directing her words to the floor rather than to Minerva's gaze.

The redhead huffs, "what's the point, you'll look scruffy no matter what you wear" she walks over to her girlfriend and takes Violet's phone from within her jean pocket. Violet doesn't bother stopping her. Minerva would only kick up a fuss, declare that Violet is cheating and hiding something from her. Then they would fight and they fight too often these days.

"Who's Erin?" says Minerva not bothering to look at Violet.

"I work with her," says Violet as she glances at the clock. They're going to be late to meet Louis and Clementine at this rate, "come on Minne we should get going."

Minerva continues to scroll through Violet's phone, not listening to what the blonde has to say. Violet bites her lip and stands awkwardly in the hallway, running her mind over her text messages, wondering if there's anything she might have sent that Minerva will read the wrong way or get jealous over. She seems to get jealous over every small thing Violet does these days.

"Okay," says Minerva shutting down Violet's phone and roughly handing it back to her girlfriend. Violet shoves it inside her pocket and begins to follow Minerva out of the door making sure to lock the flat door behind her.

"You know I don't even want to go tonight," says Minerva as she buckles up her seatbelt. Violet puts the car into drive and carefully considers her next response.

"You can stay at home if you're not feeling up to it," says Violet as she places one hand on Minerva's leg.

Minerva shrugs away from the motion and casts her eyes out the window, she scoffs loudly in derision, "and let you go on your own?" she says with poison in her voice. She scoffs once more.

Violet feels a familiar feeling of frustration settle over her, Minerva has no trust in her. Anytime someone asks Violet to hang out Minerva has to come, even if it's strictly a work do or if Minerva isn't even invited. It makes Violet feel depressed that her own girlfriend of a just over a year has that little faith in her.

Nowadays lots of things make her feel depressed.

Minerva never used to be like this. She was once sweet and bright and filled Violet's life with happiness, and then she slowly began to change. Now she's cold and harsh, puts Violet down without second thought and is quick to be snide or rude. Violet's trying so hard to keep her happy because on the rare occasions Minera isn't like this, she's lovely to be around. Problem is, Minerva is more often mean and degrading than she is kind nowadays. Only ever to Violet though, she treats everyone else with respect and understanding. Just not her girlfriend.

Violet has thought about leaving, in fact, it's something that crosses her mind a lot. She wonders what it would be like to be with someone who doesn't treat her this way, even being single and alone would be better than her current situation. But her self-esteem is dented and she feels small, as though she's lucky to even be with Minerva, even though she's constantly treated like shit. She knows she has to get out but it's like Minerva's constant beratement has reduced her to nothing.
