Great. Traffic. It's the last thing Clementine needs.
Clementine drums her fingers against the steering wheel as she waits for the police up ahead to direct cars to the diversion. The out of office meeting ended slightly early, so Clementine still has a while before she's officially supposed to be back in the office, but her boss is tight-lipped and Clementine would prefer to be early when possible. An ambulance rushes by her and Clementine watches it go, the bright lights flashing quickly as the vehicle speeds up the road. Shit, Clementine thinks. She hopes that whatever's happened up ahead isn't too serious.
The vehicle in front crawls forward and Clementine follows, inching closer and closer to the car crash ahead that's stalled the traffic. A sole police officer standing in the road comes into view, he's waving cars down a side street, ushering them away from the crash. Behind him, two more officers set up caution tape and work on closing the road.
As Clementine turns the steering wheel she dares a quick glance at the road up ahead. She gasps at the sight. A dark grey car is on its side in the middle of the road with another car lodged in a ditch directly opposite a busy side street. Only it's back tires and trunk are visible, Clementine winces at the sight of the cars. Both are dented, scraped and definitely beyond repair, glass shards cover the tarmac and fuel leaks onto the road. Clementine resists the urge to give a second look to the crash as her stomach churns in dread. Instead, she listens to her satnav as it directs her through the side streets and towards the office. Through the Bluetooth speakers, a phone call comes in and Clementine accepts it, returning both hands to the steering wheel and looking straight ahead as she begins to speak.
"Hello," she says as she indicates onto a new road.
"Hello Clementine," comes a stern male voice through the speaker "are you on your way back from the viewing yet?"
It's her boss. Clementine clears her throat before speaking again, "Yes sir, the clients seem like they may buy, but they're interested to know if we have any other four bedroom houses closer to the city centre first."
"Perfect, make some calls when you get back to the office, and make sure you book a follow-up meeting with the clients. We need this sale Clementine; I'm counting on you."
The call disconnects and Clementine turns her phone off, not wanting to be disturbed for the rest of the journey. She lifts her coffee mug to her lips, frowning at the taste of the cold liquid in the cup, she makes a mental note to pick up a new cup once she returns to the office.
The clients at the sale are hard to please and now it's getting frustrating. Clementine has shown them roughly nine houses or so and every property has been wrong so far. No walk-in wardrobe, only two bathrooms, the garden faces to the west rather than the south. Every time the brunette meets with them her boss demands she push the sale more. He's beginning to lose faith in her and it's damaging Clementine's reputation as a top real estate agent in the company.
She turns the car onto the main street and turns the satnav off, suddenly aware of her surroundings. She passes a takeaway pizza chain and makes a mental note that it might be nice to bring a pizza back home for her and Violet to share after work. It's been a long week.
After a few more minutes of driving, she turns into the office carpark and heads up the levels until she gets to her designated spot. Clementine disconnects her phone and throws it in her bag, collecting her papers and details for prospective houses and holding them close to her chest. She locks the car and heads towards the building, her high heels clicking on the tarmac.
Once inside the building she heads to the second floor, smiling at the receptionists who greet her as she passes them by. Before she forgets she diverts towards the café in the lobby and picks up two cups of coffee. Just the aroma of the hot drink makes her feel more awake, more determined to solidify this sale.
