When Clementine thinks of their beginning, she sees it like a series of polaroid snapshots.
Colourful and bright freezeframes of their happiest moments, first dates, kisses, places they visited together. All burning bright with lust and the perfection of newfound love.
She fondly remembers dancing in the rain, laughing and not given a damn that her dress was soaked, or that her makeup was smudged because she was in Violet's arms. When they kissed nothing else in the world mattered.
She thinks of all their firsts together, how brave she felt by Violet's side, all the things the older girl had taught her. The fights, the stress, all the pointless things that they thought would tear them apart. It only made them stronger.
The indicator ticks, the silence grows, and a question forms.
-
"What are you doing out here?" says Violet with a giggle as she walks barefoot on the freshly mown grass. The green lawn is peppered with daisies and wildflowers, floral smells and uncontained happiness fill the air.
Clementine is lying on her back looking up at the clouds above, the fluffy off-white shapes roll across the azure sky, carried in on the gentle breeze. "I'm looking at the clouds," says the brunette as she turns her head to look at Violet. Her hair is released from her pigtails, and the flowing mass of dark waves are spread out behind her head.
Violet smiles as she approaches her girlfriend and settles on the grassy lawn of Clementine's garden. She presses a kiss on her girlfriend's forehead before she lies on her back with her head by Clementine's and her feet pointing towards the house behind her.
The brunette turns her cheek to look at Violet and smiles, their noses momentarily touch, and Clementine can't help but reach out her hand and caress Violet's face. With both girls lying in opposite directions, the angle is awkward, but they still manage to close the gap between them and savour in a series of kisses.
"You're beautiful," says Clementine as they break apart. Violet moves up slightly, so she's resting her head against the curve of her girlfriend's shoulder.
"You're mesmerising," states Violet, quickly glancing at Clementine before slowly closing her brilliant green eyes.
Clementine cocks her head and nuzzles her cheek against Violet's. "Well, I think you're perfect, you've made me so unbelievably happy."
The brunette feels Violet's smile grow against her skin, and she can't help but grin herself. Violet opens her eyes and for a moment she watches the clouds over her head slowly move through the sky. "I feel the same Clem, after Minerva I didn't think that I'd ever be happy like this again."
Clementine rolls over on her side, and Violet copies the action. They face each other and feel the emotions of love and happiness grow.
"I can't even imagine a life without you in it," says Clementine as she strokes Violet's cheek. Violet's expression breaks into a smile, one that it seems she can barely contain.
"Don't worry about that," she says, "I'll always be with you."
Clementine looks down for a moment, "you can't promise that" she says with a hint of sadness. "You don't know where time will take us."
"Hopefully it'll take us down the same path," mumbles Violet as she closes her eyes. Using her hand to shield her face from the bright sunshine that pours warmth onto the two girls.
Violet sits up, and Clementine watches her for a while. Everything about her is so perfect, Clementine smiles to herself as she observes the way Violet watches the world unfold around her. Her attention flits between the birds flying overhead the bees buzzing around the flowers. Violet breaths in deeply and closes her eyes while the gentle breeze ruffles her blonde cropped hair.
