When Clementine agreed to come to Louis's party she didn't think that she'd end up in this situation.
Her feelings for Violet have been steadily growing over the past few months and now, as she leans against the wall and watches Violet dance across the room, she notes how frantically her heart is beating inside her ribcage.
Violet's clearly drunk, the way she moves her body to the music is so carefree as if she doesn't give a damn that Louis's living room is filled with people. Clementine watches her dance as though she's in a trance, unable to tear her eyes away from the older girl. One thing that does catch her attention, however, is Minerva. The redhead is swinging her hips in time with the beat of the song as she makes her way over to Violet.
Minerva is the complete opposite of Clementine tonight. She too wants Violet but isn't held back by inner thoughts and small insecurities. Instead, she's going and getting what she wants.
Clementine tightens her grip on her glass and forces her gaze elsewhere. Louis saunters over to her side picking up on her silent frustration. "You okay Clem?" he asks quickly glancing at her face as he sips at his beer.
"Yeah I'm fine," she replies sipping on her drink and feeling thankful that the kick of alcohol makes her wince. For a moment she finds her mind taken off Violet and Minerva as she focuses on the burning warmth at the back of her throat.
"You know," says Louis as he leans against the wall, "it's pretty obvious that you've got feelings for her." He gestures his head in the direction of their drunk friends dancing under the bright lights.
"Well I'm not the only one," says Clementine as she keenly watches Violet and Minerva begin to dance together. "Do you think they're in a relationship?" she questions to Louis, already making up her mind on their connection based on their interactions.
Louis shrugs as he takes another swig of beer, "who knows," he says. "I personally don't think they're together," he mumbles. As if to counter Louis's point Minerva slings her arms around Violet's shoulders and pulls the blonde closer to her.
Violet spins around and presses her back against Minerva's chest, swinging her torso to the music and giggling as the redhead rests her hands on her hips. Clementine inhales sharply as she watches Minerva lean down and rest her chin in the crux of Violet's neck. They both swing to the sound of the music in perfect synchronicity.
"And you think they're not together," says Clementine with a harsh tone to her voice, she thrusts her glass at the other boy and storms away from the dance floor, needing some air.
"Clem," calls out Louis in an exasperated tone as he watches her walk off, heading to the front door and slamming it behind her.
Once she gets outside she runs her fingers through her hair, weaving through the people standing and smoking by the outside seating area. She pushes through the crowd and settles on a sun lounger by the pool. She watches the steam rise off the warm waters and the lights beneath the water illuminate the tiles with a blue glow.
Why does she feel like this? She wanted to know, didn't she? Well, now she knows. Violet and Minerva are together, or at least close, and that makes Clementine's heartache. She's fantasised about being with Violet for months, ever since she broke up with Gabe and the two girls grew closer.
For the first time, she'd really noticed Violet, the small details such as the way she talks and how she looks. Her facial features which are prominent yet soft at the same time, her sweet voice, husky with melodic tones interwoven with her speech.
It's all the tiny things that she never noticed before that have had a profound effect on her feelings. It's overwhelming and almost too much for Clementine to deal with, so when she looks back into the house and sees the shapes of drunken people dancing she almost feels heartbroken.
