Chapter 3
Popcorn, Secrets, and Sam’s Silence
Alice’s POV
I jumped onto Vee’s bed, sending a cloud of popcorn flying everywhere. She laughed and pulled me into a tight hug.
“Heey, girlfriend! I really missed you,” she said, grinning.
“I missed you too,” I smiled, grabbing a handful of popcorn and shoving it into my mouth.
Vee raised an eyebrow. “Wow, after three weeks away, you haven’t changed your eating habits at all.”
I shrugged, “Look who’s talking.” We both burst out laughing.
We spent the next hour talking about everything—school, teachers, and the usual drama. Then we switched to watching the movie Vee picked out, but I couldn’t focus. My phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out. A message from Janny popped up: “Still having your birthday party? Can’t wait!”
I smiled and quickly replied, “Yep, in three weeks!”
Vee glanced over my shoulder. “Who’s that?”
“Janny. She’s from our class.”
Vee nodded thoughtfully. “Have you invited everyone?”
“Almost... except Elam,” I said firmly. “No way I’m letting him come. That boy is trouble.”
We argued a bit, but she agreed with me in the end.
Meanwhile, across town…
Sam’s POV
After dropping Alice off at Vee’s, I headed home, feeling the weight of the day press down on me. I found mum feeding baby Kei in the kitchen. Kei’s eyes lit up when he saw me, and I took him from mum’s arms.
“Hey little man,” I whispered, rocking him gently.
Mum smiled tiredly. “Thanks, Sam. I’m beat.”
I nodded, knowing how much she was juggling.
My phone rang—it was Dylan.
“Tsup, man,” I answered.
“Hey bro, you busy?”
“Nah. What’s up?”
“You remember that new girl in English? Betty?”
“Yeah, what about her?”
“I saw you talking to her after school. You got her number?”
“Nope,” I said, popping the 'p'.
“Are you sure? Or maybe you don’t want to share?” Dylan teased. “Do you like her?”
“No way. She just wanted notes.”
Dylan laughed. “Relax, man. She won’t bite.”
I rolled my eyes but smiled. “Whatever, dude.”
After hanging up, I took a hot shower and went to bed.
