Great! Here’s an expanded Chapter 8 focusing on Sam—his struggles, protective role, and introducing a couple of new characters to add layers and excitement to the story.
Chapter 8: Sam’s Burden
Sam sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the ceiling. The house was quiet now—Ally was at Vee’s for a sleepover, and Mum was resting after a long day. But his mind was far from calm.
School wasn’t easy for Sam either. People saw Ally as the girl with the fiery spirit, but most didn’t know the quiet storm that was brewing around her older brother.
The pressure to be the man of the house was heavy.
Just then, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Jay, his best friend since primary school.
“You coming to the game tonight? We could use you on the field.”
Sam smiled. Soccer was the one thing that made him feel free.
He texted back, “I’ll be there.”
As he got ready, Mum’s voice called from downstairs, “Sam, don’t forget to lock the door behind you.”
“Got it, Mum!” he replied.
At the park, Sam met Jay and two other guys, Leo and Marcus, who were new to the group but had quickly become friends.
Jay clapped him on the back. “Man, you’ve been distant lately. Everything okay?”
Sam hesitated but then shrugged. “It’s family stuff. You know how it is.”
Leo grinned. “Well, when you’re ready to talk or just need to blow off steam, we’re here.”
The game started, and for a while, Sam forgot about his worries. The rush of running, the cheers from friends—it was a good escape.
But after the game, as they sat on the grass catching their breath, Sam’s phone buzzed again. A message from Elam.
“You think you’re the man of the house? Let’s see how strong you really are.”
Sam’s jaw clenched. Elam was trouble—always looking for a fight, and now he was targeting Sam.
Jay noticed and said, “Ignore him, man. He’s just trying to get under your skin.”
But Sam wasn’t so sure.
Later that night, as Sam lay in bed, he thought about the family he was trying to protect. Ally’s birthday party was coming up, and he knew Elam wouldn’t make it easy.
He made a silent vow to himself: No matter what happens, I’ll keep my family safe.
