I Came Back For You

Chapter Four

I woke up to the sound of noises from inside my room and I slowly opened my eyes but immediately closed them as the light from the morning sun pierced through my eyes.
I turned to the other side of the bed and opened my eyes but to my surprise, I realized my husband was not here. I assumed he was in the bathroom room so I decided to head to the kitchen and prepare some breakfast but not before checking on the wall clock in my room,it was half past 10. I couldn't believe I slept that much but I guess it was because I slept pretty late.
I found Sam seated on the dinning room taking his breakfast.
"Morning mum. Dad asked me to tell you that he went to the office to pick up somethings he left and he said that he would be home before noon. Am also leaving because I have a class at 11 and I don't wanna be late." Sam said as he stood up taking his cup to the sink but I offered to help.
"Well, it's okay..has Ally called you?"
"Yeah,she said she will come straight home after school." Sam said as he walked to the door bu paused right before he opened it,

"He told me he lost his job. What are we going to do mum? I really don't want to quit my studies." He muttered slowly and I understood him.
"It hasn't gotten there dear, we'll figure out something so don't stress yourself." I told him with a smile on my face hoping he would understand.

"I hope so mum. I should get going now. Bye see you later." He left and I resumed to my duties.

Since I gave birth to Keam. James asked me to quit my job until the baby was 2 and even though we had a huge argument I ended up agreeing since I knew very well that he was capable of providing for us.

I waited for James to get home so that I could leave Kei with him as I left to go to the stores to get some groceries. I always left Kei with my neighbour but she left a week ago and has not yet returned.
I looked at wall clock and it was 2 p.m but James wasn't home yet so I decided to call him.

His phone rang for the first time but he didn't pick it. I called again but this time he picked it up.

"Hello hun. Are you still coming home early. I was hoping to leave Kei with as I..honey?" there was silence and I checked on my phone. The call was still on but he wasn't speaking.

"Honey? James?" Still no answer and then the call ended.

That was so strange. I called him again and this time he hung up.

Did he really hung up on me? I got furious but then told myself maybe he was busy or something.

I took Kei with me to the stores and the cashier was kind enough to watch him for me as I went to pick stuffs.

I payed for everything and took my luggage to the car. I went to pick the last sack and I took Kei too. He dropped his ball as we got out of the store heading to the car and he quickly let go of my hand as he went after the rolling ball. I set the luggage in the car and closed it. As I turned to where Kei was,I heard a loud horn and a car scratch before it stopped.

My body froze and I couldn't look back anymore as I imagined what my eyes were going to see. I felt my chest tighten and I was unable to breath. My mind wanted me to move but my body couldn't make any move.
I don't know how long I stayed in that state but suddenly I heard someone tap on my shoulder.

"Excuse me ma'am,are you alright?"

Was I really alright?

How could I be alright?

"Hello ma'am!"

This time the person shook my shoulder and I was startled.
I looked at a middle aged man who was holding a boy in his arms.
I quickly took the boy from him and I hugged him tightly. I shut my eyes and felt tears fall on my cheeks. The fear in me slowly slipping away and a feeling of joy taking over.
"Mommy" Kei whined and tried to wiggle from my grip. I tighten my arms on him until the man standing besides us coughed a little.
"Maybe you would want to let the little man go, he's suffocating from the grip" I looked at Kei's and immediately put him down wiping tears from my face. I realized i needed wipes and i opened my handbag but the guy offered me some before I found mine.
I smiled looking at him and suddenly my mouth hung open as I took in the person I was looking at.

"Jeff" I exclaimed

"Eva? Is that really you,kitty?"

He pulled me into his arms and hugged me tightly until I couldn't breathe anymore.
I pulled away and he apologized looking so embarrassed but the look was gone in a second.
He looked at me with a huge smile and I couldn't help but smile back at him.Such a small world. Who would thought that I'd see Jeff again and much less at this part of the world?

I then looked at Kei who was whining and I realized I hadn't introduced them.
"Oh,this is Keam my son" I told him smiling at him while I played with Kei's hair.

He squated and held his hand out for Kei to take. Kei looked at him and he smiled then he shook Jeff's hand.
"He's got cute eyes, just like yours" he said while he stood up and I felt my cheeks redden.
I cursed myself silently for feeling that way and quickly I looked away from him.
"You don't have to be embarrassed. I really do mean it. You were always beautiful and nothing has changed."
I suddenly felt uncomfortable about all this and I knew then that I should leave.
"Uuhm.. I think I should be leaving now,by the way thanks for earlier. I don't know what I would have done. Thanks again." I said as I lifted Kei in my arms so that I could leave until I heard him speak.
"It's not a big deal, anyone who was in that situation would have done the same. Anyway I see that you are in a hurry but would you mind if we see each other for coffee maybe?" He asked but I knew he wasn't expecting me to accept his invitation so when I didn't answer,he looked away for a moment and then back at me.

"My bad. It's okay though, I hope to see you soon."he said in a low tone but he still managed to smile at me.

That smile.

"Bye Jeff"

"Bye Eva."

With that,Kei and I went to the car and drove off.
