Chapter 4
Holding On Through the Storm
A few weeks later,
The house was quiet except for the soft cries of baby Kei. Rosa sat on the couch, gently rocking him, her mind swirling with worries about James and their future.
James had been out of work for weeks. Every morning, he left the house with determination, searching for something—anything—to bring home. But rejection after rejection was wearing him down.
Rosa placed Kei in his crib and went to the kitchen where James sat at the table, staring at job listings on his laptop.
“I’m trying, Rosa,” he said, voice heavy with frustration. “But nothing’s working out. I don’t want the kids to see me like this.”
Rosa reached out and took his hand firmly. “We’re a team. We’ll get through this together. You’re not alone.”
He sighed and looked up, meeting her steady gaze. “I hate that I can’t provide like I used to.”
“James, you provide love, stability, and hope. That’s worth more than any paycheck.”
Just then, Sam and Alice burst in, laughing and talking about their day at school. The kids’ energy reminded James why he couldn’t give up.
Rosa smiled warmly. “Let’s focus on the small victories. Tomorrow, I’ll call the clinic about some part-time work. And you—keep pushing. Something will come.”
The next morning, James sat at the kitchen table, laptop open, reviewing job listings. His eyes lit up as he read through one promising opportunity.
“Rosa, look at this,” he called out.
She walked over, wiping her hands on a towel.
“It’s a project manager role at a construction company,” James explained. “It’s a temporary contract, but the pay is good, and it could lead to something permanent.”
“That sounds promising!” Rosa smiled. “You should apply today.”
James nodded and started typing, carefully tailoring his application. “It’s been tough not having steady work, but I’m not giving up. Not for you, not for the kids.”
Rosa squeezed his shoulder. “And we’re right here with you. No matter what happens, we face it as a family.”
Later that afternoon, James hit “send” on the application.
“Now, we wait,” he said, managing a small smile.
Rosa wrapped her arms around him. “No matter the outcome, I’m proud of you.”
James took a deep breath and felt, for the first time in weeks, a flicker of hope.
