They were a tangle of skin, limbs, and regret. At least that's how she saw it. Her head rested on top of her hands. Her hands were on top of his chest. One of his own hands laid against his side and the opposite one covered the expanse of her back. Her right leg was thrown across his hips and his ankles rested on her left one. It wasn't the comfiest position, but it felt the most natural.
"We need to talk about this," Artemis murmured against his skin. He shivered slightly. The air around them had already cooled down. Or maybe their bodies had? Probably.
"It's pretty self explanatory, Mai," He tried to joke but his voice came out crackled. He had told her that he loved her. She didn't say it back, but kissed him with all of her being. That's what it felt like. Clothes came off quickly and you could only imagine the rest.
The blonde looked up at him and shook her head, "Saying I love you and doing it without any non-platonic relationship prior isn't self explanatory. It's -
-Confusing, terrifying, and so stupid," Dick answered for her. It was stupid. She was his best friend. He always felt something towards her. He didn't know if they were mutual, however. But the way she kissed him, touched him, and moved with him was not a spur of the moment thing. His brain wanted to make up excuses. Maybe she thought he was Wally? He knew that wasn't the case. She could have been frustrated, but that wasn't it either.
Artemis moved her legs and and hands to sit up. All she could do was nod. Words felt too hard to utter. She thought he had described the situation well enough for both of them.
Dick sat up too. He kept looking at her as if she would disappear. Artemis didn't bother to make eye contact. Dick knew part of her regretted it. Some part of him did too. It would've been easier if he hadn't told her those three idiotic words. He felt compelled to in that moment. It just rushed out from his lips. The young detective thought it was funny how that short expression meant so much and could make or break something so precious.
"Artemis, I should have never done that."
"You regret it?" Artemis finally looked at him in his eyes. Dick was never the one to hold emotion in his eyes and the one to rely on body language. Now, he was different. She could see the sadness in his eyes and his inner turmoil. The heroine could see the love in them, too. It created a fuzzy feeling in her heart. It made her feel like she was enough (not that she needed his validation).
"I regret saying how I felt, but I will never regret loving you. And for second part of all of this, it felt amazing. Not only physically but spiritually, if that even makes sense. I don't want this to be too sappy, but that's how you make me feel. You make me want to be sappy," Dick chuckled to himself at the end. His hand inched up towards hers. Artemis was the one to intertwine their fingers together.
"You made me feel like enough," Artemis flashed him a quick smile, "And hearing you say those words made me the happiest I've been in a very long time."
"Really?" His eyes open wide in shock.
She gently punched his shoulder, "Of course, stupid. That kiss was probably the only self explanatory thing about this," Dick chuckled again as he leaned in closer towards her.
When their noses were touching, he opened his mouth to speak, "I'm going to kiss you."
"Do it, Boy Wonder," She smiled against his lips before closing the space between them.
