You know in hospital shows, when a patient wakes up there's always this dramatically bright white light and you hear the beeping of the heart monitor in the background, and the patient ends up looking great even though they just woke up from a coma?
I fucking wish that's how it went down.
My head was throbbing when I opened my eyes, and I felt this shooting pain all throughout my body. I tried to sit up, but cussed at this stupid pain in my back and laid back down.
I let my eyes adjust to the light and looked around. No one was in my room, but I could hear voices out in the hall.
I rolled on to my side and sighed, closing my eyes and taking in a deep breath. I took a few, actually. I felt like I hadn't breathed in a long time.
The door to my room opened and I opened my eyes slightly. My mom poked her head inside and gasped when she saw me awake.
"Hi baby!" She closed the door and rushed to my bedside. She smiled as tears pooled in her eyes and she brushed some of my hair back. "Oh my baby..."
"Hi, Mom." My voice was barely there. I cleared my throat and realized how dry it was.
"I'm so glad to see you awake." She sniffed. "How do you feel? Do you need anything?"
"Water," I said, "and Jake. Is Jake here?"
"He's outside, and yes I can get you water." She got up and went outside for a minute. Jake came back in holding a glass of water.
"Hey, man!" He set the water down and practically ran towards me. I forced myself up and hugged him tightly.
"Don't you ever fucking scare me like that again." He cried. "I will fucking kill you."
I laughed and hadn't even realized I was crying, too. "I won't. I'm so sorry."
"It's okay." Jake whispered and looked at me. He smacked my forehead in a playful manner and we both laughed. "I'm just glad you're alive."
I drank some water before laying back down. Jake went out to get Hunter, but ended up coming back with all our brothers.
"Family reunion?" I smiled.
Each of my brothers gave me a big squeeze, and Hunter cried for a minute while hugging me like Jake did.
They all scattered themselves around the room, and Charlie climbed on to my hospital bed and snuggled his head into my chest. I kissed his head and he smiled looking up at me. "I missed you."
"I missed you too, buddy." I ruffled his hair.
"How you feeling?" Brant asked.
"Tired, sore." I shrugged. "But I'm glad I'm alive."
"Yeah, us too." PJ said. "You really scared us, man."
"I know." I sighed. It was only then I realized that we were short one brother. "Where's Cody?"
Everyone suddenly tensed up and looked at each other.
"There was an accident." Xavier scratched the back his neck. "He's okay, he's upstairs."
"Accident? What kind of accident?"
Reece nodded over to Charlie and shook his head.
I sat him up and smiled. "Hey Charles, why don't you go ask Mom if you can find a snack for me?"
