my sweet depression: a slam poem

You felt so familiar,
It has been a long time since I saw you,
Since I felt you,
Since your arms wrap around me,
Pulling me into the deep darkness that we both know too well,
My sweet depression,
What caused you to finally lash out?
What caused you to finally push me under?
To drown me beneath the surface.
To whip me raw.
To cut my vocal cords, keeping me from crying for help.
What made you snap?
To finally strike at me.
To finally corner your victim,
Enabling her to save herself.
Tell me, Depression.
You and I have been at it for a while.
We have been doing this dance for years.
I know you will be honest with me.
But I also know that you twist the truth and add your own deception into it.
So, if we are going to be fair to each other.
I might as well know the truth.
Tell me, what made you attack?
You wait till the last second to wrap your arms around me.
To pull me close to you and suffocate me with your hands.
But this time,
This time it is different.
This time, I am stronger.
And you're scared of that.
Aren't you?
