a continuation of little me: a short story

hide and seek: a short story

I found you once again.
This time you were crying and you had a few scrapes of your knees and arms.
You were a little older now.
But, in the end, I still found you.
You look tired, exhausted even.
I wrapped my arms around you and held you close.
"Please...continue," I spoke softly in your ear.
I know it is difficult.
I know it feels like the world is against you.
But I promise you that we are going to make it.
"But I'm so tired..." you replied, a whimper even escaped your lips.
I know that look in your eyes.
I know that dullness all too well.
"I know but with all this pain you're enduring, I promise that you will make it. You're stronger than you think you are." I spoke softly as I gently brushed some of your hair out of your face.
You always had some covering your right eye and I know why too.
"Promise?" You asked softly.
I nodded my head and gave you a hopeful smile.
"I promise...but remember that the pain you feel is a life lesson and a reminder. No matter what you go through, keep pushing. Don't give up." I replied.
You nodded your head but I knew that the cuts on your thighs said another story.
"How is your life now?" You asked.
I was quiet for a moment and slowly backed away from you.
"I'm still pushing." I replied simply but then paused before asking, "Would you like to play another game of hide and seek?"
You nodded your head.
"But this time...I'm going to find you." You replied.
I nodded my head.
"Cover and close your eyes and count to 100," I spoke softly, waiting for you to do as you were told.
Eventually, you did and you started to count.
1: I walk away.
2: I begin to run.
3: I trip.
4: I fall.
5: I bruise a little.
6: I keep going.
7: I keep going despite the bruises and tears.
8: I keep going despite my anxiety and continuous depression.
9: I keep going despite the minor inconveniences.
10: and I keep going until you reach 100.
Why?
Because you will soon learn that we are going to help others when nobody was there to help us.
And we will eventually save ourselves.
