Chapter 14

SOPHIE'S POV:

"It was an accident. Lucas, you have to understand, people make mistakes." I heard someone softly whisper. It sounded a lot like Jane. Why was she talking with my father? They rarely talk as it is. Was he here?

I was so tired. My eyes wanted to stay shut, but I knew I had to open them. My body felt really heavy. As I slowly lifted my eyelids, I saw a blurry figure opposite me. I was in a... hospital bed? The figure moved around slowly and shifted uncomfortably. Jane does that a lot.

I tried to sit up and see what was going on, but I felt pain shoot through my ankle. For some reason, I couldn't move it. I winced and plopped back down onto the bed. Like I said, I'm not a morning person so I didn't really properly comprehend what was going on. Suddenly, the figure turned to face me and dashed for the bed. I shakily lifted up my arms, which I were able to move, and carefully rubbed my eyes. When I could clearly see, I saw Jane leaning beside me by the bed.

"Sophie!" Jane let out a little cry. She reached for my arm and gently touched it. Though that was enough to make me flinch. I glanced down at my arm and noticed that there were a few purple bruises covering it. She mouthed 'sorry' and put her hand back to her side.

When I took a good look at her face, I noticed that her eyes were red and puffy. Her brown hair was tied in a messy, tangled bun and she was wearing simple black leggings, white T-shirt and black flip flops. She didn't look well prepared at all and a little tired.

"How do you feel?" She asked. Her eyes were filled with sadness and concern. She pushed some hair that was shielding my ears, out of the way and tucked it behind my ears. I have to say, Jane was probably the closest thing I had to a mother. She looked out for me, cared for me and treated me like I was her very own daughter.

"I'm alright. It's just that my ankle is killing me." I confessed. Whenever I tried to move it, pain travelled from my foot all the way up my leg. Then I began to think properly. I was in a car accident! With Niall and Zayn. Oh my god. "Where's Niall and Zayn?!" I heard the heart monitor beside me pick up its beat.

"Sophie, calm down. They're going to be okay. Zayn fractured his wrist and Niall only has a few painful bruises around his body. But all in all, you three are very lucky to come out of that accident the way you have." Jane said.

"Oh thank god. What about the deer?" I asked. I was just curious.

"Well, the car flipped over the deer. It actually didn't get harmed at all."

I nodded and calmed myself down about Niall and Zayn. I was so relieved to know that they were okay. I don't know what I would've done if either of them were seriously injured. Then I thought about the moments before the crash, the events of last night. That kiss. I was definitely not going to tell Jane about it. But just a little more importantly, that message. Another message. They were right - whoever they were. I was warned and chose to do nothing about it. But I couldn't let someone scare me for my whole life. Something had to be done.

"Jane, I have to tell you--"

"Ah, Sophie, you're awake!" I heard a voice come from the doorway. I stopped talking as I was rudely interrupted and glanced over to where the voice came from. A tall man with grey hair and short spiky facial hair across his chin stepped over to the end of my bed next to Jane and picked up the clipboard which was attached to it. He adjusted his thin black glasses and started to take in all the information.

The man with the deep voice, which I'm assuming was a doctor, hummed a small tune to himself. He was obviously trying to make the situation less uncomfortable for all of us and it was actually working. I waited patiently as he pressed his fingers across the clipboard and placed it back down.
