Chapter 22
ZAYN'S POV:
I was more than worried by now. My phone hadn't even sounded for a second and my mind began to play tricks on me, making me believe I had heard things. Not long ago, I thought I had heard a faint noise. Like someone or more than one person were yelling. I even asked Lerie, the girl I had met, but she insisted she heard nothing. It was then that I was convinced that I was going crazy.
"What are you talking about? I can't hear anything." She had said to me. I shrugged my shoulders and brushed it off. Niall should be back sometime soon. Maybe I'll give him a call and check where he's at. Then again, if he'd found Sophie, he'd tell me. So I left it.
Lerie was very considerate when she suggested to help me. We spoke about how she also lived in Pakistan once upon a time and moved down here. I was surprised I'd never seen her before but it was nice to finally meet her.
With the more people we had involved, the greater chance we'd find Sophie. I was already beginning to miss her. She was a great girl, but it was more than obvious that her and Niall were just meant to be. The sooner they figured that out, the better.
"So," Lerie spoke up, and I faced her, "how do you know Sophie?" She smiled. I was about to think of a lie to answer her, because she couldn't know about the real reason, when I thought for a second. Since I've met Lerie, I told her about what Sophie looks like, but never did I once mention her name.
"What?" I asked her.
"How do you know Sophie?" She repeated, still smiling.
"Uh.. I never told you her name." I notified her. This girl wasn't psychic, was she? How could she have possibly known Sophie's name? Lately Sophie hasn't had a lot of time to meet someone new and it's not like Lerie would've known that she went missing.
She hesitated and knitted her eyebrows together, confused, "Yeah you did."
"No, I didn't." I corrected her. This was more than peculiar. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, especially because I had no idea what conclusion this was going to. She stood there awkwardly.
I felt something vibrate in against the outside of my leg and realised my phone was ringing inside my pocket, interrupting the strange conversation I was having with Lerie. Without stammering, I stuck my hand in my pocket, answered the call and brought the phone to my ear.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"We found Sophie," I heard Liam's voice through the phone. I let out a breath which I didn't even realise I had been holding in and brought my hand to my face and slid it down in relief. I glanced at Lerie who was watching me pretty tensely, which made me feel a little uncomfortable.
"Okay." I replied, casually. I didn't know how I should be reacting in front of her. I was still taken aback by what she said and the looks she was giving me.
"Didn't you hear me?" Liam asked, "We found her! She was in that burnt house place not far from the sports ground. You know the one? Niall's here too." When Liam said that, he caught me by surprise. How did he get in there with Sophie? "They said some girl with black hair kidnapped Sophie and held her hostage. Uh.. Lerie! That's her name!"
I felt my chest sink into my stomach. All these thoughts were going through my head. I wanted to move my feet, but they were stuck on the ground like they were in drying cement. Lerie was still looking up at me, innocence across her face. Did I really hear people calling out for help earlier? She lied to me this whole time.
"T-Thanks." I said into the phone, stuttering a little. My heart was beating faster and I felt my upper lip go sweaty, "Call you later... Mum." I didn't know where 'mum' came from, but it was all I had.
