Chapter 27
NIALL'S POV:
This was absurd. No, it was ridiculous. Wait, I take that back, it's stupid. That's the word. It's stupid that Sophie is putting her heart on the line like this. She could get hurt in just a matter of moments - when she steps off the plane even. But she chose to do this. It was her decision to make and since I had no input, she was going to have to walk this journey on her own.
I inhaled the fresh scent of coffee while placing my hand around the warm, white mug. Greg took me out to get a coffee at the cafe down the road - the one Sophie had met Zayn in. I don't look at this place the same anymore, but that doesn't mean I can't go here. Greg said he had something to tell me. I wasn't worried about it, I had just thought it was news to do with himself.
I assumed that Sophie wasn't going to say goodbye since her flight was this morning and I hadn't gotten one phone call, text, email, letter, anything. We hadn't spoken since yesterday afternoon, not a single word. It's not like I could blame her though, I should've supported her when all I did was yell at her. The only thing I was hoping right now is that she doesn't like it in England and she wants to come back here. Yes, for my own selfish reasons.
"So why'd you bring me here, brother?" I asked him with a playful twist on the word 'brother'. He was sitting opposite me as he turned his attention to me, like I snapped him out of some sort of trance. I took a sip out of my mug and eyed him while waiting for him to speak up. Normally news doesn't take this long, considering he was being hesitant. I was getting worried.
"The King and Queen spoke to me earlier this morning while you were sleeping." He stated. How much earlier? It's only eight in the morning right now. "They told me to tell you that your service is no longer needed... I'm sorry, buddy."
My service? What do I service to-- I froze. My job, as Sophie's bodyguard. I had been fired. No, not fired. They just don't need me anymore. I scrunched my eyebrows inwards and kept trying to figure out what this means. Will I see her anymore? A knot formed in my throat and as much as I tried to force it down, I couldn't. But no tears were surfacing. I was completely numb.
"S-So, what's gonna happen then? Was Sophie there?" I questioned him. My jaw clenched and I ran my fingers through my hair. I hadn't dyed it in a while and my brown roots were starting to show, but I didn't care.
"No, she wasn't. They also said that all the money you have earned so far, you can have." He took a sip from his mug and raised his eyebrows. After placing it down and swallowing, he continued and laughed greedily, "And that's a lot of money."
I didn't know what expression to show because I didn't know how I was feeling. I felt like glaring at Greg because a part of me, a major part, didn't care for the money. I just wanted Sophie, that's all. Then again, a tiny part inside of me was eager to find out how much money I had gotten. There's nothing wrong with thinking that! I've worked seven years for it.
But if Sophie's parents no longer needed me, did that mean that they were cocky of her wanting to stay in England? Because if so, they didn't know her too well. No way did they know her like I do. She'd step one foot out of the airport at England and instantly freeze. She absolutely despises cold weather. She wasn't going to like it there - well, that's what I keep telling myself.
What if I don't know her, though? I was beginning to question myself. What if my assumptions are completely and utterly wrong? There could be a possibility that she would love it there and prefer it so much more than here in Australia. The thought kept playing around in my head and was eating away at me. I had to see her.
