Chapter Eighteen

"Master, I failed"... My weak voice echoed within the infinite void surrounding myself. "The boy used everything against— me".

"I saw"... A deep, harsh voice responded from the darkness. "We had a deal, Łachłan. If you can't follow a simple order, I'll have to do it myself... I pity your existence".

"But master", I painfully responded. "The boy... he's stronger than you may think. His will has greater power than yours and mine combined".

"Do you really think so little of me, slave?" It replied, sounding more frustrated with each word. "Since you can't follow through, I'll do it. Until then, I'll be waiting... I won't go to him... he'll somehow find me".

Waiting...

Waiting...

Waiting...

"Xander", a muffled, commanding voice interrupted my psychological haze. "Xander, get up! You're convulsing! Someone help!"

My eyes shot open. "I'm fine", I whispered, and stood up shakily. A wave of emotions came over me. The very same emotions that weren't mine. This was bad... very bad.

When the emotions faded, and I was left with my own thoughts, apart from someone else's, we somehow made it back home. I zeroed onto Tina's dumbfounded face.

"How?" She asked, eyes growing wider, with confusion growing more within me. "How did you make it back here completely unconscious?"

Uh... what? When did we land? "I— don't remember even landing, hun", I added, thinking to myself. "Perhaps I had some sort of subconscious that knew where to go?"

"Maybe", she interrupted, shaking off the events. "What happened, anyway? What was the deal with you going unconscious?" We stared at each other for a long time. I was trying to come up with a viable answer, without freaking Tina out.

She was still under the impression that Łachłan was eradicated. The episode I experienced proved it wrong. I should have stayed there to make sure it was dead. "It was nothing"... I chirped, trying to hide my obvious lie. Tina lifted an eyebrow.

"Xander", she spoke softly. "Don't lie to me. I can smell it off of you. Tell me the truth... now". I contemplated, fiddling with my fingers.

"Fine", I sighed. I just can't win with this pack, including Tina, Chey, and especially Jerick. "I have... reason to believe"... I paused. What if they're listening? I took the precaution and entered Tina's mind. She seemed unphased by the action.

I have reason to believe that Łachłan isn't dead. Severely injured, but not dead. I realize my mistake in not making sure, but there's a new threat. A big one, Tina... There was something else. Something... more threatening than Łachłan and anything I've ever experienced combined. We're in danger, and we have to be prepared.

I finished my thought to Tina. Her eyes grew much more wide. "Xander! What're we going to do? Whatever it said, it means business. This isn't something to joke around with or to let subside. We have to warn the pack. Can you enter everyone's mind at once?"
