Chapter Twenty Three

It took a little longer than expected to make it to the farmhouse. I had to take a couple of breaks while flying, just so I could rest my body for more flying again. For the powers, it really takes a toll on the body. CeCe was looking at the pasture by the time I got to her.

"About damn time", she whined, and turned to me. "I've been waiting for an hour for you to show up". She took two steps to me and checked me out. Not in the sexual or flirtatious way, just scanning me for differences. "God damn... you never changed a bit, have you?"

I shook my head. "I'm afraid I've been this way for many decades", I countered, staring at her back. CeCe never changed as well. We both looked like we were still eighteen years old. "So... what's the meaning of this meeting?"

"Before I get to that"... She mouthed, looking directly at my face. Her big wired glasses made her look ridiculous, but still appreciated her deep down. Even though Cecelia was little more than a stranger now, being able to see her now was a breath of fresh air. "Do you remember what happened? You know... back when we stopped talking and you cut yourself off from the world?"

"Uh... yeah", I sighed hesitantly. "Why would that matter? It's in the past now. What matters is that we're talking here, and now. What I'm curious about is how the hell you're a vampire now!"

"Xander", she spoke lowly, and sat me down next to her. "It does matter, actually. Back when you went missing, I tried searching for you. Everyone was worried about you. We had search parties everywhere across the area. When nobody else could find you, I made it a mission to do it myself. That's how I got turned".

My eyes sort of bulged from my head at the revelation. "You— went missing too?" I asked, placing a hand on her shoulder slightly.

"Yes, Xander", CeCe added. "We were missing at the same time. Everyone gave up looking for us. When I came back home, I too became a recluse. I hid myself away from the rest of the world. Xander, I called this meeting because I want to make amends with you".

"Amends?" I asked sadly. Tears were somehow forming in my eyes. I was always an emotional puddle of hormones, don't judge me. "Why would you want to make amends with me? We never had a falling out, and we surely never fought".

"I know", CeCe sighed, wrapping me in a comforting hug. "I just— wanted to make up for the times where I never was there for you when you were hiding yourself from the world".

"Likewise", I countered immediately while still hugging her. "I wish I could have been there for you too more. What happened sucks for the both of us, but... there is a silver lining to all of this. I met a man who cares for me, and we have a child on the way!"

"I'm happy for you", CeCe smiled for once, a truthful, real smile. "I wish I could have what you have. How'd you do it? You always had a way with words and actions".

"Simple", I added with more optimism. "Just be yourself, and don't try to be like anyone else. Don't try to impress someone by changing. All you have to do is stay true to yourself and always go for the gut instinct!"

"That's so cliché", she snorted while letting out a slight chuckle. "I'll give it a go, I guess. Thanks for meeting me today. I hope we'll talk more. By the way... who turned you? I know it's off topic, but I'm curious".
