Chapter Fifteen
I never spoke a word to anybody all day and night. Neither did Jerick. He was still in shock over the ordeal earlier on. I was running on a little more than a full day of no sleep. I agreed with Cheyanne, though. Jerick did what he had to do in order to protect me and the pack.No one could get over the fact that the Thuvud forced Bram to be defenseless against Jerick's grip on his neck. It was all a huge game to it. Making him kill Bram for its own amusement. Chey would momentarily check on Jerick and I from time to time.
She really was the only one who had the determination to check on us. One thing is for certain, though. I knew that I'd have to deal with the Thuvud again in the future. I secretly hoped never again after what happened, but knowing what had already happened, that was next to impossible.
"Xander", Chey rested her head on my shoulders, looking up at me with sad eyes. "Please talk to me. Please talk to the pack. We're all hurting over what happened, as well. Don't do this to me". I winced at the words. Tears started to well up in my eyes.
I couldn't find the words to talk to her. My lips parted slightly, but snapped back shut. I leaned into her messy hair and sniffled. "I-- didn't want it to-- end this way, Chey". I cried into her hair. "I fucked your lives up badly, didn't I?"
"Oh, hunny, no". She immediately interrupted, holding me in her tight embrace. It felt like any hug a loving mother would give to a crying child. "You didn't fuck any of our lives up! What happened was truly fucked up, yes, but the look in Bram's eyes showed us that he was sorry".
Hearing that made me cry harder. "H--how?"
"He was hypnotized", Chey interrupted my struggling words. "His body might have been under its control, but his eyes told the truth. Eyes are the gates to the soul, Xander. He knew what was going to happen, and he accepted it. None of us wanted it to end this way".
The soft rain drops tapped on the windows again. The dark grey clouds rolled over the misty, distant pine covered mountains. I'd never taken in the magnificent view before. Jerick took what happened the worst. He sat in a rocking chair, still staring at his shaking hands.
I wanted nothing more than to be in my boyfriend's arms, but they weren't warm anymore. He was in shock, covered in many blankets trying to keep warm himself now. Cheyanne's wife was watching him.
The rest of the pack sat in silence, watching television. I stared back at Chey, which was now sipping from a cup of tea. "So", I shakily sniffled. "What's going to happen now? With-- Bram gone". Chey didn't look up, instead lifting the teabag up and down in a strange pattern.
"He's the new alpha", she hesitantly sighed through her nose, still paying attention to the teabag. "He was the second in command. Now-- the new alpha". I nodded, burying my face into the table, watching the clouds fall eerily over the mountain tops. The talking from the rain slowly progressed to lighter thuds.
"Just"... Chey interrupted once more, taking a more prolonged sip from her tea, seeming much more satisfied. "Things will get better with time. Jerick has to adjust. You have to adjust. We all have to adjust now. I want you to try sleeping tonight. You look like complete death".
"I hope". I sighed, glancing at my struggling mate. It broke my heart to see him like this. "I hope things get better, for all of us".
