She was running away. Maya had been trying to stay out of sight of the Black Widow for almost three years, and still, somehow, Natasha found out where she was hiding. Not being able to afford transportation anymore made it difficult. Being stuck in Venice - a city surrounded and literally built on water, which was miles off the coast of Italy - made it even more difficult to find somewhere to hide. Just a day in San Marco square, attempting to hide in plain sight is what would ruin it all and would lead to Maya's first encounter with Natasha in years
Maya:
I knew I couldn't run, I couldn't just run away and make a scene. What else could I do but listen to her?
"Please, just give me and the rest of the team a chan-"
"No, I'd rather keep in hiding than go with you just to be put in jail, or worse, executed," I said, cutting her off, my mind had already been made up, But Natasha wouldn't budge.
"But you wouldn't be put in jail, Tony could get you immunity and you could join the team..."
"No, the last thing I need is the rest of the world chasing after me. With the number of people I've killed and the number of crimes I've committed, I should be in jail for a quintuple life sentence. Do you really think that the U.S. government would give immunity to someone who has over two times as many credited assassinations as the Winter Soldier? Because they already hate him a ton," I say, slowly getting up and leaving a twenty on the table for my coffee and lunch. I mentioned my kill count hoping to convince Natasha to give up on something that most definitely was not going to happen. The government didn't understand my situation, nor did they understand the Winter Soldier's, and they were too ignorant and stubborn to listen.
"I don't think you realize how persuasive Tony is. Plus, if we told the government you would eventually become an Avenger, they wouldn't be able to say no. They know about you, you would be a real asset, with your powers, your extensive combat training and your higher form of education, you could join the team right now." She said, rushing her words as if I was going to run away any minute. I started to leisurely walk away from the table with Natasha following me and watching my every move.
Not being on the run all the time sounded nice, and not being a wanted criminal in dozens of different countries sounded even better. But being an avenger? No way. I don't want publicity, nor do I need the attention. I've seen how many people negatively react to even Captain America, America's golden boy of all people. If some millions of people hate him, imagine how negatively people would react to me.
"Okay..." I said hesitantly.
"Okay great-"
"No, I didn't finish," Interrupting her. If I was going to go to New York I was going to go on some ground rules. "Okay, I'll stay for a month. In the meantime, I'm not joining the avengers on missions. If I like the facility and I can get immunity, I'll stay for longer. And maybe after a few more months, I'll start going on the occasional mission. Also, I don't want in on any of Tony's parties. Does that sound like a plan?"
"Okay, I'll call Tony and see if that's okay with him. He might not be happy that you'll be there but I'll see what I can do. Come with me." Natasha cockily states. She starts to pick up the pace and head to the docks right beside San Marco Square. She leads me on to a boat with a small motor. Natasha starts up the motor and starts driving the boat away from the island. I'm suddenly reminded that I have things in my hotel room that I should get, but I don't really need. After all, I had my phone and my wallet on me, and I could afford to leave behind my shitty clothes and sad excuse for a bed.
While we were driving I started to play with the shadow that the rope was casting onto the floor of the boat. I started to move my fingers around while the shadow started to wave side to side, and then I snapped, and the shadow disappeared.
"You know it's really disorienting when you do that." Natasha remarks while smirking, interrupting my train of thought.
"Yeah, that's kind of the whole point. Courtesy of HYDRA as you know," I said unenthusiastically. I knew Natasha knew about my powers. Everyone on planet Earth with a phone or access to a newspaper knew who I was.
While Natasha was driving the boat she pulled out her phone and pushed a few buttons on her screen. Suddenly, a jet with the Avengers logo slapped on the side appeared out of nowhere. The hatch to the jet opened and Natasha parked the boat right beside it. We hopped onto the quinjet and took off.
