"Oh god no, I do not like him like that!" I yelled from the bathroom, where I was doing my makeup, to Bucky, who was getting dressed in a suit that Steve had lent him for the night.
"You sure? You can tell me, I won't say anything."
"Ugh, shut up! 'Kay yeah, I'll admit, he's cute, but that would never happen. Even if I did like him," I yelled again. I could tell by the arrogant tone in his voice that Bucky knew he was bothering me, I just knew there was a smirk finding it's way to his face right now.
"So, you think he's cut-"
"Yes, I think he's cute. Everyone thinks he's cute - he's Captain America. That doesn't mean I like him. You can think someone's cute and not like them, that's a thing," I said, annoyed, yet amused with the conversation I was having.
"Okay, whatever you say," he said in a mocking and sarcastic tone. I was just finishing my mascara when Bucky walked into the doorway of the bathroom. "How do I look?" he asked as I looked over to him. Bucky was wearing a classic black and white tuxedo with dress shoes. His long hair had a center part and was tucked behind his ears, and he was clean-shaven. Of course, he had to have on a set of black gloves. He looked good. Bucky always looked good, but damn, he looked good. I could feel my cheeks starting to heat up a little. Thank god my concealer was covering it. I turned back to the mirror to finish my makeup to ensure he wouldn't see anything.
"I still don't think you need the gloves," was all I could say while finishing my mascara. He looked down at his hands and then looked at me through the mirror, then he shrugged. "But you clean up nice. You look good, Barnes," I say, adding some mystery to that last statement.
"Thanks," was all he said with a small smile, then it was his turn to blush a little.
"I have to head over to Natasha's to find a dress. But I'll see you in a few?" I asked.
"Definitely," he said smiling, and then I left the room.
Bucky and I both knew that the feeling was mutual, but our concern and care for each other was growing every day we knew each other. We both came from the same place, so we both knew what the other had going on inside their head. I cared about him a lot. I had only known him a short time, but I felt the need to look out for him. I know he could handle himself in almost any situation, but some instinct of mine told me to protect him in any way I could, knowing that he would do the same for me.

Natasha had enlisted Wanda to help us find me a dress. Given the amount of these parties that both Wanda and Natasha had been to, it should be obvious they'd have a number of dresses to match the occasion. It had been about half an hour and to no surprise, we were late for the party.
"No... no... no... no," Natasha trailed on as she slid through dresses in her closet for this specific occasion. "Oh my god I forgot about this," Natasha said with a smile.
"Let me see!" Wanda said, reacting before I could. "Oh my god, it's perfect," Wanda squealed. Natasha took the dress off the hanger to show me, it was gorgeous. The dress was royal blue, it had a lace-up back, a slit up the thigh, and the front was modest - to some extent. It was perfect. I'm sure that both girls could tell by the expression on my face that this was the dress.
"I'm definitely wearing that tonight."

"If Tony's definition of a party is a whole-ass gala, what's his definition of a small get-together?" I asked Natasha and Wanda as the three of us walked out of the elevator. Some people noticed the three of us and looked over, and I'm pretty sure they were looking at me with fear or in shock.
"We haven't actually had one of those yet," Natasha jokingly answers. We kept walking deeper into the crowd on the first floor, which was heavily decorated with blackout curtains and various gold-coloured items. I looked over and saw Tony talking with Ross and immediately looked away, I was dreading the moment I would have to meet him. We kept walking to an open area where everyone was sitting. Bruce, Clint, Thor, Steve, Sam and Bucky were all sitting in a circle on the various couches that were dispersed across the floor in a circle-looking shape. Steve looked up from the conversation and smiled.
"Glad you could make it," Steve said to me.
"Well, it's not like I had any other plans tonight," I say sarcastically. I take a seat beside Bucky, and Steve takes a seat beside me. With that, Bucky felt the need to nudge me, I looked over at him with a glare and he gave me a mocking grin. I elbowed him in the ribs to shut him up, he grunted lightly and looked in front of him with a smirk. "So it is true that Thor has some thousand-year-old stuff from Asgard that can actually get a super-soldier drunk?" I ask.
"Not just that," Thor answers, "It was aged for a thousand years and the barrels were built from the wreck of the Bronco fleet." he finished in his Asgardian accent.
"...Great! Pass it up. I haven't had a drink in like three years," I say, desperately wanting to feel any sort of buzz I could if I was going to gain the courage to meet Ross.
"Are you sure? No offence, but you are a bit short," Thor said, which honestly offended me a little. I struck Thor as a lightweight.
"If I can down a bottle of whiskey and not feel a thing, I'm sure I can handle a single shot of that," I said, pointing to the canister that held Thor's alcohol.
"Just give us the drink," Bucky said, motioning with his hand towards us. I looked over at him with a questioning face, he leaned in and talked softly in my ear, "If we're gonna meet Ross, might as well have some fun before our night's ruined, right?" he said. He surprised me. Bucky... having fun... never heard of it.
"Wow, I never knew Sargeant Barnes would be one to drink right before meeting a superior officer," I said softly, facing him. He smiled a little.
"By the way, doll, you clean up pretty nice as well," he said, even quieter, and then sat up, turning his face away from mine.
Bucky's remark made my cheeks heat up and shivers run down my spine. Doll. He had to say it again, in front of everyone this time. I was sure at least Natasha could sense some sort of discomfort in me. The bad part was that at the moment, I enjoyed it when he called me that. I liked it just for a second when he said it, but I immediately dismissed that thought out of my head.
Thor poured me and Bucky drinks and handed them to us. I smelled the drink and immediately downed it, wanting to feel a buzz as soon as possible. In just a few moments I could feel the effects of the alcohol starting to show, I felt the delicious burn of the drink run down my throat to my stomach and I started to feel a little giddy. "That is by far the best drink I've ever had," I say with laughter in my tone. A few moments later I felt a tap on my shoulder, I turned around and it was Tony, with Ross standing right beside him. Tony then made an introduction.
"Maya, Bucky, I'd like you to meet Secretary Everett Ross,"

A/N:
Hey everyone, I know I've said it a bunch, but I really am thankful and so glad this book is getting more attention than I expected, and I have all of you to thank for that. This is the first fan-fiction I've ever written so I'm still trying to find my voice as a writer and just get better in general.
If any of you have any advice or critique please leave in the comments because I'm always looking for ways to improve my skills as a writer.
Thank you all so much and have a safe quarantine :)
