51. The Turnabout Night

Arriving at Nick's place, Miles kissed Rachael goodnight.

"You're not going to walk me to his apartment?"

"Of course," Miles got out from the car and went over to open Rachael's door.

Exiting, she took his hand as he closed the door, leading the way.

"I hope he drove home safely with Maya," Rachael expressed. "Seeing Nick like that nearly made my heart shatter."

Miles ran his hand through his hair. "I can only imagine what he is talking about with Maya."

"Perhaps what she's done tonight?" Rachael thought.

"Most likely," Miles frowned. "She did act out of hand."

"Well, we can't read her heart as to why she reacted the way she did towards Kay, but apparently this history with Kay goes deeper than we've imagined."

"Indeed."

Once they had reached Nick's apartment, Rachael opened the door and walked in, seeing that the lights were out.

"Hello, Nick?" Rachael switched on the light, with Miles walking in after her.

"I guess he didn't make it home yet."

"How is that possible...?" Rachael mumbled, checking his room. "We left before he did, but we didn't come directly here," Rachael turned to Miles worriedly. "We stopped at that park to talk for a while."

"Well," Miles shrugged. "I guess he's doing the same thing with Maya."

"...I hope so."

When Nick and Maya arrived at Miles' complex, Nick parked the car and directed Maya to the elevator. Reaching his floor, Nick knocked on Miles' door. But no one answered.

Confused, Nick knocked again, but a little harder.

"Do you think that they're still out?" Maya whispered.

"I'd hope not," Nick frowned. "They should have been here by now."

Pulling out his phone, he dialed Miles' number.

Miles responded puzzled. "Mr. Wright, where are you?"

"That's what I want to ask you."

Catching himself before he snapped, Miles pinched the bridge of his nose. "We're at you're apartment."

Arching an eyebrow, Phoenix stared at his phone. Pulling the phone near his ear again, Nick asked why.

"Are you kidding?" Miles questioned. "I told you at the restaurant that I'd take Rachael home."

"Yeah..." Nick muttered. "...I assumed your place."

"Not tonight..." Miles mumbled, turning his face away so that only Nick could hear him. "...I figured you'd want Rachael around to talk."

Nick remained quiet for a moment. "...I need Rachael and Maya to stay at your place tonight."

"W-What?!" Miles gawked.

"I...really don't feel like myself tonight." Nick held his forehead. "I feel like I'm about to do something I'll regret."

"As in?"

"It's personal. Not worth mentioning."

Miles meditated for a brief second before answering. "I hope you're making the right choice."

"Believe me, I am," Phoenix insisted. "If I wasn't, I wouldn't be confiding in you about it."

Miles couldn't argue with that. "Alright fine. Rachael and I are on our way." Hanging up, Miles slid the phone in his back pocket.
