"Hello?" I call out into the void. I was surrounded by black and there was nothing around me. "Is anyone there?"
"Rei, sweetie?" A voice echoes through the empty space.
"M-Mom?!" I feel my heart swell at the sound of her voice. I haven't heard it for ten years.
A woman appears in the distance. She wears a white dress and a sun hat. She walks toward me barefoot, her long light brown hair flowing behind me. She smiles when she reaches me. "Mom! I missed you so much!" I sputter. "But where are we? Where's Katsuki? Where's everyone else?" I ask frantically. Her smile turns sadder as her beautiful eyes glimmer. "Sweetie, this is the bridge."
"What?" I ask in confusion. "What bridge?"
"The bridge to the afterlife." She replies.
"T-The what?! Am I dead?!" I exclaim.
"Not yet." She states. "You have a choice. You go back to your life and continue living through pain, or you can come with me to the afterlife."
"Wait, are you dead?" I quietly ask.
She sadly nods her head and gives me a small smile. "I took my own life after you and your father went missing." She explains. "I was so lonely."
I feel a lump in my throat. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have let him leave you. I should've fought him." I whisper out. "I'm so sorry."
She smiles reassuringly. "It's fine sweetie. You and I can be together now."
I frown. "Mom...I'm so sorry, but...you said I can go back, right?"
Her smile falters a bit. "Yes, I did."
"Can I...go back." I ask quietly.
"You do know you'll have to live through the pain and fix the mess you left behind?" She states.
"I know." I say firmly. "That's why I need to go back."
She nods and smiles at me. "I'm so proud of you." She gives me a hug. It was warm and comforting, the way her hugs felt when I was small.
I feel her touch fading and the deafening silence of the empty space filling with ear-piercing beeps.
I peel my eyes open. They feel dry and my eyelids stick together, but I keep them open."HOLY FUCK YOU'RE AWAKE!" I hear next to me. I turn my head painfully as my neck feels quite stiff. I see Katsuki with his eyes wide and face shocked.
I give him a small smile. "Hey." My lips were dry and my voice was hoarse.
"You've been in a coma for two weeks and all you have to say is, 'hey'?!" He exclaims.
"Two weeks?! Holy crap!" I shout out hoarsely. "What about you and everyone else? Are they okay?" I ask worriedly.
"We're all fine. Only you and Deku got really hurt." He replies and I release a sigh of relief.
"I'm really happy you're okay." I croak.
"Me? I'm really happy that you're alive!" He exclaims. "I-I mean, yeah I'm happy you're alive, but just- just don't get the wrong idea!" He embarrassedly stammers.
I laugh weakly. "You're the one who's been waiting for me to wake up."
"I-I...was, but you're awake now, so I'm going to get a doctor." He gets up and leaves the hospital room, shutting the door behind him.
Just a few moments later, two doctors and Aizawa-sensei walk in. "Hello, Rei Tamiko. You've finally woken up. You've been in a coma for two weeks after almost bleeding out to death, severe epidermal abrasions on your arm, and puncturing several internal organs. Recovery girl fixed most of the damage, though." The doctor stated. They then gave me a small checkup and told me I would be released in a week. After, they left the room, leaving Aizawa-sensei and me alone.
