Phoenix pov

"You said yes?" Suki and Jimmy have disbelief clearly written on their faces.

I nod. "You should have seen the cars, and besides, the pay isn't bad."

Jimmy shook his head. "Just be careful, alright? This guy isn't someone you mess with."

I give them a smile. "I'll be fine guys, i've been sarcastic from the start and he haven't killed me yet."

"You can be too sarcastic and honest sometimes." Suki mumbled.

I pretend not to hear her.

"Have you met the new guy yet?"

I look at Tej. "New guy?"

"Yeah, he's a top racer, asked if he could pay rent to live in my boat."

My eyes widen. "Dang, tight on cash for an apartment?"

Tej shrugged. "Dunno, he's asked about the upcoming races though."

Third pov

"Give him a shot." Phoenix took a look at the time. "I gotta go. I got things on my schedule."

"Hey, how you doing Jorge?" Phoenix greeted the other racer with a smile.

"I'm good chicka. You here for the car?" Jorge chuckled at her enthusiastick nod.

He led her to an old beat up Dodge charger. "What you gonna use it for?"

"Just one of my own projects. I appreciate you letting me store it here at the moment"

"Ah, don't mention it. You're a friend after all."

The two of them had know each other since before she came to Miami.
"Heard anything from your parents?"

Phoenix shook her head. "Disowned me, remember?" She checked the car over.

Jorge frowned. "They still haven't backed down on that? Thought they would've dropped it by now."

"You don't know them like i do. I humiliated them in front of their friends. To them I'm as good as dead." She sighed and gave him a pat on the shoulder. "Thanks again."

She pretended she couldn't feel Jorge's concerned look burn into her back.

Time skip

The door opened without problem and Phoenix stepped inside where the cars in less than pristine condition was. Carter hadn't said any particular one he wanted her to begin with, so she decided to just pick one.

Working with cars was something Phoenix greatly enjoyed. She always had. Even when no one else appreciated her work. She could remember the disapproving looks her parents gave her. Her mother's sneer every time she went near cars. Her father's anger every time she snuck in after being street racing.

Every interaction ingrained in her memory.

"You're working hard." Monica Fuentes said as she saw how far she'd come with the car she'd picked.

Phoenix shrugged. "I guess so. I'm sorry but who are you?"

"I'm Monica Fuentes. I work travel and logistics for Carter. I heard he had a new mechanic and thought I'd check it out." She explained.

Phoenix nodded. "Alright. I'm Phoenix, it's nice to meet you. How long have you worked for him?"

"Seven months." Monica felt a weird unease as Phoenix studied her for a moment.

"Was there anything you wanted?"

Monica shook her head. "Just wanted to check in."

Phoenix gave another nod before going back to work. Just as Monica was about to leave she looked up again. "Could you tell Carter i have a list of parts i need him to order?" As soon as Monica nodded her head was in the engine again.

Phoenix put the meeting to the back of her mind as she worked well into the night.

Phoenix pov

My body hit my bed as soon as i came home. Sweet, sweet bed. I love you so much.

With the precision of a drunk i somehow managed to put an alarm on for the next morning before promptly falling asleep.

*Ring ring*

"Aw come on, who wants to talk to me at," I check the time. "Nine? Shit, it's already nine?"

I push the answer button. "Hello?"

"Phoenix, i heard you have a list for me?"

Carter. Of course it's Carter. "Yeah. It's car parts needed for one of the cars. When can i give it to ya?"

"Whenever you feel like it. Come by later though, i would like to talk to you."

The call ended and soon after an adress was texted to me. I guess i have something to do today.
