"MELODY!"
I gasped awake, looking around frantically. Beside me, Aiden jerked awake too.
"Jesus, you two were out cold." Sophie said.
I blinked up at her groggily. She was in a pretty brown dress and her hair was done nicely.
"What's going on?" I mumbled.
"It's the Moonlight party?" She said worriedly. "Did you forget?"
I closed my eyes and grimaced. "I did. Ugh. So much has happened."
Aiden snorted.
"Are you still coming?" She asked.
We went every year together. It was a big party in honor of the changing power of the moon. The whole coven should be there, which apparently I wasn't a part of anymore. As if he could run this place without me.
The simple fact Dad wouldn't want me there was exactly why I got up and got dressed. Fuck him and fuck his stupid attitude. The only thing I wished was that I could bring Douglas, but I was sure he'd be busy with Saul after Aiden ripped him to shreds.
Aiden decided to stay behind. He never was one for the coven parties, and now he was too worn out to bother. I couldn't blame him for that.
The party was already well underway by the time we got there. The sun was just setting and the party would go all night until sunrise. All my friends and family were there. Everyone was drinking and laughing. Some were dancing. Everyone was having a blast.
I wished Douglas was there.
Sophie brought me a drink and we took to dancing to upbeat country music.
The hours past by and I was actually having fun. It was nice to feel like things were back to normal for once. This was a gathering I'd gone to every year for my whole life. It was almost like everything was fine instead of falling apart.
Garrett came up behind Sophie and she turned and giggled into his kiss. They spun around and disappeared into the crowd.
Not two minutes later I was face to face with Jack.
I felt my face harden. I signed. I was being too hard on him.
"Hey!" He yelled over the music.
"Hi!" I yelled back.
"Where's your fanger?"
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. "At his boyfriends! Why?"
He shrugged. "Everyone's talking about what you said at the center!"
I nodded. Of course they were. I guessed that was the point, but I also hated it. Why did everyone have to have such a problem with him? I could handle it. He was just one easy vampire. I'd fought way more than that for them and it was fine, but apparently I couldn't love one?
It was a load of crap.
"Wanna dance?" He asked loudly.
I made a face, but decided to nod. Dancing was something we used to do. We'd done it a bunch of times at this party over the years.
He took my hand and I kind of hated it. Hadn't we held hands before? As friends. This felt different. Would he see it as more? I hoped not.
We spun around and I dropped his hand. We could dance without touching.
He leaned in some and I leaned back instantly. "So is it true?"
"Is what true?" I asked even though I was pretty sure I knew. And I didn't like that he asked one bit.
